We accept Rachel's Challenge
Thank you to our parents who joined us for the community night this past Thursday to learn about the Rachel's Challenge program. What an impactful and moving assembly for our junior high students as we are all inspired to be better by learning about the life of Rachel Scott. Our elementary students also learned about ways they can be like Rachel through acts of kindness and compassion that we look to carry throughout this school year. Look for ways Holy Trinity students will carry out the mission of Rachel's Challenge in their classrooms and in our school community.
Have a great weekend and Go Eagles!!

Parent Corner:
As we are getting settled into the school year, we will begin to see our students' emotions running high. When our children are struggling, we usually don’t see the emotion at first. We see challenging behaviors such as yelling, pushing, ignoring, work refusal, withdrawal, irritability or doing the opposite of what they were told. These are just a few examples, as children and teens can behave in various ways when struggling with emotions. Always keep in mind that emotions are often the driving force behind behaviors.
A child or teen most likely isn’t going to say, “Excuse me, I’m struggling with my feelings right now.” They might act out, though. Here are simple strategies that can be used with children preschool to teenagers:
Please Note:
- We still have parents stopping and getting out of cars at the South doors. If your child needs assistance getting out of the car in the morning please be sure to pull all the way up to the office. You are welcome to assist your child but we need to make sure the cars can continue to move around the building and prevent a traffic backup on Nagel. Our staff is also outside and happy to help:)
- When picking up your students for appointments throughout the school day, please call the school office when you arrive. The office staff will need to know where you are parked and will walk your child out to your car from the nearest doors. Please have your car tag visible at this time as well. In order to make sure you get to your appointment on time, please pick up students before 1:30pm. Thank you!
- Forgotten lunches? Gym clothes? If you need to drop off items to school, please use the table and sign off sheet located outside the main office doors. The office staff routinely checks this table throughout the day and will deliver items to your child.
- Just a reminder that the physical education uniform this year has changed for grades 4-8. Spirit wear is no longer acceptable. Students are required to wear the new red PE shirt, the old red PE shirt, or a plain red athletic shirt. Students can choose their own bottoms in black, navy or grey.

MAP testing information
In the Spring of 2017 the Diocese of Cleveland moved away from the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and adopted MAP testing (measure of academic progress).
Next week your child will take a MAP Growth test from NWEA on a chromebook or Ipad. MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth.
MAP Growth tests are unique, as it adapts to your child’s responses to measure your child’s skill level. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a more complete picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level.
Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.
MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students who are in the same grade, subject and have the same starting performance level.
Each school year, students in grades K-8 take the tests in September, January and April. Following each testing period, you will receive a Family Report showing a summary of how your child is performing academically.
We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about MAP Growth, visit NWEA.org/familytoolkit.
