Visual Arts Update
Spring has sprung which means it’s the busiest time for the Visual Art Program at BHS! Last Friday we held the first (maybe annual) Art Marathon! During this event, we opened the Ceramics and Art rooms from 3:15pm until 10:00pm to students, families, and alumni. The turn-out was phenomenal and we heard many positive comments; one visiting alumnus who is in her 60’s, mentioned that she saw three generations making pottery, all learning from each other. Some of the incoming eight graders from WMS joined us as well as many current students and family members and several alumni, all in all it was a huge success.
In May we have our two big yearly art shows. One is the all-county art show in Lynden at the Jansen Museum, in which you can see the top art from all the Whatcom County high schools on display. The opening reception is on May 2nd, from 5:30-7:00pm and the show will run for the month, so please take the time to visit Lynden and take in the exhibit.
The second of our annual shows is for the Allied Arts Children’s Art Walk in downtown Bellingham. Bellingham High School will have the whole Hair Art Studio (next to the old city hall building) filled with art from the 2-D classes. Please come see the show either on the opening night May 3rd from 6:00-9:00pm, or anytime during the month of May.
On May 16, Ceramics 2 and Pottery Club students will be going to Design Days, an event which will be open for four days, May 13-May16. This event celebrates Western students and the design industry with a variety of guest speakers, student presentations, and workshops that are free and open to the public.
Visual arts at Bellingham is stronger than ever with our new classes such as Jewelry Making, Painting, Watercolor and Drawing! We also have a successful Art Club that meets every Wednesday after school until 4:30pm, and Pottery Club that meets every other Thursday until 4:00pm - all students are welcome whether they are currently taking art classes or not.
Lastly, if you would like to see what goes on in the classes and clubs or are curious to see some of the kids at work, please check out our Facebook group “Bellingham High School Visual Arts” and our Instagram account “Bellingham High School Arts” (bhsart).

Healthy Technology Night
From 6:00 – 7:00 pm join district staff and Teen Council for an overview of the healthy technology promise draft and a panel discussion about relationships in a digital age (including topics of sexting and consent). From 7:00 – 7:45 pm there will be three breakout sessions. Breakout session 1 is a continuation of the Teen Council session on relationships in a digital age. Session 2 is focused on understanding how to support students with the academic side of technology – specifically how are teachers implementing the 1:1 technology program at middle and high school, and what tools are available to parents to support student academic success. Session 3 is a broader look at raising adolescents in a digital age and will include time for parents to review and utilize recommended resources from Common Sense Media.
