Census 2020
March 10, 2020
Dear Folsom Families,
With National Census Day- April 1, 2020- around the corner, I urge all residents to stand and be counted. Not only because the law requires that every person living in the United States be counted once every 10 years, but also because of the impact the census data has on local schools and communities.
The U.S. Census, which provides a headcount of every person in the United States, has been tabulated every 10 years since its inception in 1790. Census results determine how many seats each state receives in the U.S.House of Representatives and help drive decisions on how more than $675 billion is allocated to communities for roads, schools, healthcare, emergency response and more.
The 2020 Census count directly impacts federal funds that communities like Folsom receive each year for programs and services that are critical for schools, students and younger children. These funds are necessary in a number of areas including special education, Head Start and after-school programs, classroom technology, teacher training, free and reduced school lunches, and maternal and child-health programs. It is a national count, but clearly the local implications are numerous and far-reaching.
Census invitations will be sent from the federal government via the U.S. Mail to each household with directions on how to access the U.S. survey. In addition to accepting responses by mail and telephone, for the first time, the 2020 also can be completed online. While April 1st is considered National Census Day, invitations will begin arriving in mid-March, and there is no set completion date for the questionnaire. Final counts are expected by the end of July.
The survey is available in 13 languages. All responses are confidential and are not accessible to law information agencies. For more information, please visit www.census.gov.
Your participation in the U.S. Census survey process is just one more way that your good citizenship positively affects the Folsom School District and surrounding communities. We are grateful for your response on National Census Day.
Respectfully,
Matthew Mazzoni, Ed.D.
