Stuff to consider this week
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Mat 28:19-20 ESV)
39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, "Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?" 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" (Mar 4:39-41 ESV)
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (Rom 5:1-5 ESV)
Java Jam // Dec. 21
- Publicize to family, friends, neighbors, etc. This is one of the only large-scale community events our youth group (and CBC) does throughout the year. Super chill and just a fun place to go and invite people to come hang out.
- Help us get some donations for silent auction and online giveaways. Attached is our donation letter that you can print out and help us get some stuff. I'm also going to challenge your small group/dg/ministry to come together and donate something towards Java Jam as well.
- Ask to help with a part of Java Jam - photo exhibit, decorations, food, cleanup, etc. Contact Admin, Justin, Robert, or Myra.
Busting myths about teen girl anxiety
- Between 2005 and 2014, the percentage of teenage girls experiencing depression increased from 13 to 17 percent. During the same time period, that statistic moved from 5% to 6% for boys.
- A larger portion of 13- to 17-year-old girls report feeling tense or nervous every day or “almost” every day (36% for girls vs. 23% for boys).
- Overall almost one-third of girls and women (31%) experience symptoms of anxiety, compared to 13% of boys and young men.
Myth #1: Stress and anxiety are bad.
Without stress and anxiety, you and I likely wouldn’t be alive today. Neither would the girls we care about. Stress and anxiety are triggered by what we perceive to be dangerous situations (e.g., a car is coming right at me) that activate our “fight-or-flight” response. Our adrenaline and heart rate increase and oxygen rushes to our muscles as we prepare to either face the potential danger or run away. Anxiety is an essential alarm system, but it can run us ragged when it spins out of control.
GET THE YOUTH TO WINTER RETREAT
Reason #1: We don't have many large events in our youth group, but we do have Winter Retreat. So when we do have something like this, we're going to highly encourage our students to participate.
Reason #2: They need to be around other youth and other leaders. It's not enough that our students only hang out with their peers, they need to be around others who are different than they are, those who annoy them, those who they don't usually socialize with. Why? So they can grow themselves. So they can grow each other. So they can learn what a community looks like.
Reason #3: To end the year and start the year together. There is much value in allowing our students to build community together - esp. if the goal for next year and DGs is to "build community."
