Celebrating Circles with the Sullivans
Ms. Sullivan's Daily Community Circles
Ms. Sullivan starts each morning by turning off the lights, gathering her students in a community building circle, and having a different student each day lead the circle discussion. The circle leader begins by ringing a bell and bringing everyone's bodies into a mindfulness position. Breathing and Body Scans are a major component of Ms. Sullivan's circles.
The circle leader starts the discussion by answering different questions based on the day of the week. Questions may include naming feelings, a favorite food, what a child is good at, etc. Once every student has shared, the circle leader closes the circle in the same way the circle began, by sitting in a mindfulness posture, breathing, and ringing the bell to conclude morning circle.
Creating daily circles is a great way to set the tone for each school day. Not only do kids have a chance to be seen and heard while calming their bodies, but by doing it daily, students begin to learn and practice circles, which makes circles more and more effective in the long-run. These "Circle Building Blocks" establishes the foundation for middle school and high school restorative practices.
If you would like classroom support to do daily circles, please email Coach C. at deborah.cuny@ousd.org. Coach C. would be glad to sit-in, run a circle, and/or help brainstorm effective strategies to improve circles based on the developmental stage of class.
