High Lakes News
April 2017
This Months Highlights!
High Lakes Families,
We hope you all had a fun Spring Break with your children! The excitement in the air when they came back was noticeable. I can’t believe we are already in April.
…Kindergarten Roundup
We will have our Kindergarten orientation on April 19th at 10:00 AM and then again at 5:15 PM. If you have a child who will be entering Kindergarten next year please stop by for the orientation or if you are already familiar with the school, please pick up a registration packet on that day. We would like the packets back as soon as possible so that we can plan accordingly for next year. If you have neighbors and friends who do not get our newsletter, please tell them about the orientation on April 19th.
…Testing Season
We are now in testing season. Over the next several weeks, our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will be taking the Smarter Balanced (SBAC) tests in English Language Arts and Mathematics (plus Science for 5th grade). Individual teachers will be letting you know when your child will be testing. These test results provide us with a tool to evaluate teaching and learning in our school and to compare our growth against state and national results. SBAC scores will be shared with parents at the beginning of the next school year.
…Student Drop-off
When dropping your children off in the morning, please remember that we do not have supervision until 8:30 AM, so please do not drop children off before 8:30 AM. We would also like students to arrive by 8:50 AM so they are here, ready to learn on time. Thank you for supporting us with these efforts.
...Parent Input form
We do not accept teacher requests for class placement, but this is your chance to let us know what your child's strengths and learning styles are so that we can make the best placement possible for each and every student while balancing all of our classrooms. Input forms can be picked up in the office and are due May 12th.
…Buckets
You may hear teachers talk about “Buckets” and wonder, “What are they talking about?” This is just a name we (and the district) use to categorize school improvement as it relates to our school story. Our work is divided into three areas or buckets. They are the Academic Bucket, the Thriving Citizen Bucket and the Future Ready Bucket. Each certified employee is a member of a bucket team and each grade level is represented.
At this time the Academic bucket’s main focus is to learn about strategies around writing in response to reading. We will be changing that focus to math in the near future. Our Thriving Citizen Bucket is working on student engagement and the Future Ready Bucket is working on collaboration and communication. Many of our School Improvement Wednesdays are dedicated to professional development in these areas. We want to make sure you are in tune to what we are working on as a school.
As always, thanks for helping us build a better community.
