How I Met My Major
Just as Ted Mosby met the Mother through a series of trials, tribulations, happenstance, and discovery, many of us are on that same journey with finding our majors. Though hopefully your journey to your major will not be as trying as Ted’s journey to the Mother, it will still be a journey.
With this being February and accounting for the fact that the smells of freshly printed Hallmark cards and chocolates are in the air, we thought we’d share the moments with the staff and students of the AU Career Center found their major.
Meaghan | Career Counselor | Industrial Design: “I was an engineering major at the time, and I had just left my physics lab, and I thought to myself that this isn’t what I wanted to do. So, I went home, opened my Bulletin [because in this time in history the Bulletin was actually printed on paper], and started looking at majors. I found the Industrial Design curriculum, and had a realization. Engineering was a work boot, it got the job done. Industrial Design was a stiletto, it also got the job done, but it looked great doing it. I knew I had made the correct choice.”
Brad | Peer Career Advisor (PCA) | Software Engineering: “It was the first time I really became engaged in the work I was doing. I remember losing track of time and hours would go by while I was working.”
Nancy | Director | Physical Education and Counseling: “I didn’t know that I had picked the right major untll I stumbled into my first job in the Career Center. I had spent time watching people do this work and realized that working at a college with students was something that I was interested in. It took that first job and the following 30 years of work to know that I had picked correctly.”
Eli | PCA | Communications: “I had the opportunity before coming to college to participate in a “College Game Day”-like experience for my high school football team. It was a broadcasting class. After that experience I knew that I wanted to continue to be involved in things like that, and so I picked Communications when I started at Auburn”
Torey | Career Counselor | Psychology: “I was in Dr. Katz’s Sensation and Perception class, and we had just started a section on cognition pathways in the common pigeon, and I can remember thinking to myself, that this is one of the most fascinating things I have ever heard, and I guess anytime you actually I want to learn more about cognition pathways in pigeons something must be clicking.”
Ellen | Graduate Assistance | Elementary Education: “I knew I had chosen correctly on the first day of my student teaching. I was in a room full of children, and within the hour I was confident in my choice.”
Alyxx | Marketing and Communication Specialist | Mass Communication: “I really enjoyed my internship. It felt like a natural fit, and it didn’t hurt that I felt like I had the skills to be successful. I looked forward to going into the job and was actually happy doing the work.”
Though all of us had different experiences along the way that led us to our realizations, we all shared one common thread. We all had an experience. So, during this month of Singles Awareness and Chocolate Kisses we challenge you, put yourself out there, explore new areas, and you, like Meaghan, might realize you’re not a work boot but a beautiful stiletto.
Food for Thought
Pathways
Pathways are a great way to see what lies ahead for your major/prospective major. Use these tools to get an idea of opportunities for involvement, experience, and future options. They'll never replace the value in talking to Academic Advisor or Career Counselor, but they'll give you a great way to get started with the process.
