MLK Day Thoughts
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is more than just a day off from school or work. There is significant meaning behind this day. These are two of the many quotes from Dr. King that I find particularly meaningful: "Those who are not looking for happiness are the most likely to find it, because those who are searching forget that the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others." "Without love, there is no reason to know anyone, for love will, in the end, connect us to our neighbors, our children and our hearts."
This is a good time to think about others and what we can do to make their lives better. We truly cannot do something for someone else without getting some of the goodness on us. Please take the time to talk with your family about what you can do to serve others even if it is just the smallest of ways. Martin Luther King, Jr. has left an amazing legacy that centers around the value of people, service to others, and speaking up for those who are less fortunate than we are.

Music Notes
Literature plays an integral role in music education as it provides context to listening lessons and often serves as the building blocks of the music lesson. Thanks to a generous grant from the Northfield Fine Arts Boosters (NFAB), Mrs. Hummel was able to purchase an additional set of books for the Bridgewater School Library, for students to check out, read, and share at home. This set of books supports the development of music/cultural awareness, addresses social emotional topics, and shares stories of overcoming adversity.

for a New Year!
If you or your child are reading chapter books; use a bookmark.
Have a conversation: talk to your child as often as possible. Try to use advanced vocabulary as children understand oral language more naturally than reading. Your child understands words spoken to them that they might not be able to read, yet!
Have your child tell you a story, or you can tell them a story.
Turn the captions on the TV.
Listen to audiobooks in the car.
