Teeland Middle School

October 2022

Letter from the Principal

10-1-22

Dear Teeland Families:

Fall is here and with that comes the darkness and icy roads. If your student is walking or riding a bike to school, please have them try to stay off the main roads, wear reflective clothing, walk bikes when crossing roads, and remove headphones and earbuds. We have had many concerned phone calls from drivers that are having trouble seeing students that are walking and riding bikes to school.

In an effort to reduce the amount of traffic on the Seward Meridian Parkway between 7:15-7:45 am., TMS is open for drop-off students at 6:45. When our buses are fully staffed, we will return to being open for students at 7:00 am. As I stated in a parent email this week, we know that safety is a concern with the increased traffic in our area. Mat-Su Career & Tech High School will be holding a community meeting on October 12, at 6:00 pm. The intention of the meeting is to discuss a plan to increase community involvement in communicating with our local assembly to move forward on the Seward Meridian Road expansion.

I would like to share with parents that we have seen an increase in school incidents involving vaping. Please talk with your student about the dangers of starting this kind of behavior, including obvious health concerns, and the fact that it is illegal for students to possess vapes and vaping paraphernalia. We are working with local law enforcement with our repeat offenders.

Under state law Sec. 11.76.105. section b:

(b) Possession of tobacco, an electronic smoking product, or a product

containing nicotine by a minor is a violation.

Students with repeated violations may be issued a ticket and fined up to $500.00. Students can anonymously report concerns to any staff member in an effort to increase safety for all our children.

The end of quarter one is in two weeks! If your student is needing extra support, we have Study Hall and Math Lab starting up the first week of October. Permission slips are in the office. Parents have access to student grades on ParentVue and students can show parents their Google Classrooms with all their assignments listed. Most assignments can be completed in classes if students are on task and using their time efficiently.

Parent/Teacher conferences will be scheduled on October 31st via zoom unless an in-person conference is specifically requested. More information will be sent out soon with sign-up times and zoom links. Please feel free to reach out to your student’s teachers at any time. Email is the best way to connect, and teachers are happy to answer questions or address concerns. I appreciate hearing from parents as we all work together in STRIVING towards excellence!
