Radon Awareness Month

January is Radon Awareness month: Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that is produced by naturally decaying uranium in the soil and can be drawn into homes through cracks in the foundation. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Approximately 1 in 3 homes tested have radon levels at or above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L in Indiana. https://www.epa.gov/radon/national-radon-action-month-information

For the past several years, HSE students have participated in the American Lung Association Poster Contest and have helped education others on the danger of Radon through art!

We need your student’s help explaining science through art! The 2023 Indiana Radon Poster Contest is here! This is a fun, educational, and potential prize-winning opportunity for our students.

In order to spread the message about radon’s health hazards, the American Lung Association is calling on Indiana students age 9-14 to create a radon poster that will increase public awareness of radon gas and encourage people to test their homes.

If you choose to participate, please send your posters to central office Attn: Bob Rice by March 1. I will collect all submissions and send them to the American Lung Association by the March 10 deadline.

Full Contest details and additional radon information is available on the contest website at: https://www.lung.org/getmedia/f35e8929-325b-4610-9a37-b1b3559cb582/IN-Poster-Contest-Official-Rules

Family Resources

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Students continued the Second Step Elementary digital program, a researched-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve children’s social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school.

Please see the Second Step Weekly Home Link attached at the bottom of the newsletter for specific information discussed in each grade level Week 18.

Snack Attack - Fishers Youth Assistance Program

NBE is pleased to announce the return of the Snack Attack program for those students in need. This program, supported by the Fishers Youth Assistance Program, is designed to provide students a little extra nourishment for the weekend until they can receive a hot meal at school on Monday.

Here's how the program works. Your student will pick up a small sack of food to be taken home over the weekend. The sack is filled with individually wrapped snacks such as granola bars, fruit cups, pop tarts, peanut butter/crackers, Goldfish crackers, etc. The type of snacks will vary each week. Please let us know if your child has a peanut allergy as he/she will receive a special bag of peanut-free snacks.

There is no cost to you or the school. This program is open to students that qualify for the reduced lunch program or have an increased need currently.

To be part of this free program, you must sign up your family online. https://forms.gle/xrKNaxRaLypSqKvV8
