Oak Hills Newsletter

November 20, 2020

Assistant Principal's Message

Dear Oak Hills Families,

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is quickly approaching! Next week will be a shortened week of learning for students. Monday and Tuesday will be our normal schedule for CDL. Wednesday through Friday, schools will be closed for Thanksgiving.

Our specials teachers (P.E. & Music) will be making some adjustments to their synchronous and asynchronous lessons in order to provide equitable access to in-person instruction for all students, due to school closure days. Please look for communication from specials teachers or your child's classroom teacher, if specials changes will impact your child's schedule.

The coming weeks will be filled with excitement as we prepare for our Oak Hills Virtual Book Fair and Food Drive benefitting the Sunshine Pantry! We have included details of these two events within the newsletter for this week. We hope that you will consider joining us in participating!

Due to the shortened week, there will not be a school newsletter for the week of 11/23. Please look for the next Oak Hills Newsletter on Friday, December 4th. Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving break! We hope that you find some time to relax and enjoy the company of those who mean the most!

Oak Hills PTO Move-A-Thon UPDATE!

Thank you for participating in the Move-A-Thon yesterday! We had nearly 180 Zoom users (some joining in household groups) for our Zoom Zumba session, produced by Ms. Vallee! We are nearing our goal of $25,000 and there is still time to donate!

Mark Your Calendar: We have tentatively scheduled a celebratory 'Silly String Ms. Baumgardner & Ms. Hansen' date of Wednesday, December 16th. This will also be the date top earners from each classroom will be invited to pick up lunch from their teacher at school.

Here is what you can do to support us:

1. Sign up for pledgestar - https://pledgestar.com/oakhills

2. Ask family and friends to support you

3. Get moving on November 18! Run, walk, bike, dance for 30 minutes.
4. Post photos on our Facebook event page to see your fellow classmates in action!

If we reach our $25K goal (that's $55 per student), we'll host a drive-by silly string party! Please register today.

Thank you for your support in raising funds for our school community at Oak Hills!

Social Studies Information & Unit Overviews

Current Context

The Beaverton School District social studies adoption process has been taking place over the last two years, delayed due to budgetary issues in 2018-2019, and delayed again due to the pandemic in 2019-2020. Social studies units (linked below) are intended to be responsive to this current, significant moment in our history and to the evolving scope of Social Sciences education.

While the units are not school board adopted district curriculum, the CDL resources may be used and modified for students and classes to engage in meaningful learning around racial justice. The unit was crafted to be culturally relevant and responsive to this moment, and with an intentional eye of actualizing Oregon’s 2018 Multicultural Studies Social Sciences standards, as well as Oregon’s Draft K-12 Ethnic Studies Standards).

3-5 Links: Identity and Culture, Diversity, Racial Justice, Action & Me

Classroom teachers will be sending out letters to families, providing specific dates of instruction for each unit. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please kindly let your child's teacher know, in advance.

Oak Hills School Photography- RESCHEDULED for 3/3/2021

Oak Hills Elementary School Picture Day has been RESCHEDULED for Wednesday, March 3rd from 9am- 6pm in the gym. In mid-February, we will send out details of this event and a revised Sign-Up Genius link to reschedule appointments. We appreciate your patience as we navigate evolving safety measures for group gatherings.

UPDATE: Wednesday School Pick Up/Drop Off Days Traffic Plan

With the rainy season approaching, we would like to try out a new traffic plan for our Wednesday Pick Up/Drop Off events, to prevent rain and water damage to classroom and library books. Our current system of pop up tents was not effective during the periods of windy, sideways rain we experienced on Wednesday.

Instead, we would ask that you enter the parking lot through the main entrance, travel through the parking lot to the exit, turning right to access the bus lane from the parking lot. We will be set up to distribute books and learning materials from the bus lane at the side of the building.

Having families access the bus lane through the main parking lot will direct any waiting lines away from neighborhood roads and prevent a difficult traffic merging situation from occurring.

This change will begin at our next Wednesday Pick Up/Drop Off event on December 2nd! Thank you, in advance, for your help!

Oak Hills Food Drive- Wednesday Dec. 9th &16th

During the month of December, Oak Hills will host an annual Food Drive for the Sunshine Pantry! The Sunshine Pantry is a local organization, supporting Washington County families (500+ monthly) with food, toiletries, and clothing.

We will be accepting donations on Wednesdays (12/9 & 12/16) during Oak Hills School Supply/Book Pick Up and at the Oak Hills Book Bus stops.

PLEASE CHECK EXPIRATION DATES: Oregon Agriculture Department requires all food collected to be within the labeled expiration date. Approximately 30-40% of foods collected by local food pantries previously had to be disposed of because it was expired. During inspections, if food pantries are found to have 10 or more outdated items, they must close for a complete inventory. We ask that expiration dates are checked carefully. Thank you fo your help in keeping Sunshine Pantry open to serve the local community!

Most needed items include canned tuna, dried pasta or beans, and peanut butter. In addition to non-perishable food items, we can accept hams or turkeys for the holidays.

We will be hosting a friendly competition between our primary grade levels (grades K-2/Primary ALC) and our intermediate grade levels (grades 3-5/Intermediate ALC). When dropping off items, please indicate which grade levels you would like your donation to support! Good luck to all!

Oak Hills Staff Favorites

Each year, we receive a number of requests from families wanting to know personal preferences of Oak Hills staff members, if they are choosing to share their appreciation with small gifts. Please know that your gratitude (in the form of an email, a card, or a short note) is enough to brighten the day of our amazing staff!

We have assembled a slide deck of Oak Hills Staff Favorites that we keep on hand in the school office (for our use) during Teacher Appreciation and other celebrations throughout the school year.
