Counseling Corner
Hello and happy new year! As we start a new year, it’s always a good idea to focus on our health and happiness. Attached is a “Happier January” calendar with little steps all of us can take to reflect on and share positivity and kindness.
In addition, next Monday in P.E. classes, OMS counselors will be teaching a FACT lesson in all three grade levels. FACT is the district’s program to educate students about the harmful effects of substance use on the body and to promote healthy choices. The 6th and 7th grade lessons focus on the use of vaping products/e-cigarettes, while the 8th grade lesson addresses vaping, marijuana, and the abuse of prescription drugs. Students are encouraged to talk with their parents or guardians about what they learned, so don’t be surprised if they drop some newfound knowledge on you at the dinner table!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your student’s counselor – Jill Gouger (Student Last Names A-K) and Allyson DiNitto (Student Last Names L-Z).
OMS Office Hours and Outside Wait Times
This is a reminder the OMS office does not open until 7:00am. Students will be waiting outside until the front doors are unlocked. Student will wait in the front entry foyer until they enter the building at 7:15. Families, please do not drop off students before 7:00am.
In the afternoon, the office closes at 3:30pm. Please make sure that you and your student have made after school pick up plans before they leave for school in the morning.
Library Has Limited Number of Chromebooks
Every student needs to bring their chromebook to school fully charged every day.
The library has a very limited number of chromebooks to loan to students whose chromebooks are malfunctioning. If your student does not have their own chromebook, there is a possibility that there may not be one available for them to use during the day. Any chromebook that is borrowed must be returned at the end of the school day.
Oxford Middle School Shoe Drive
Oxford Middle School will be collecting used shoes thru the end of January. Clean out that closet and donate shoes you've outgrown or never wear and drop them off in the bins inside Oxford! All shoe sizes are being collected...from baby to adult.

Reporting Safety Concerns
Attendance Reporting and Notifications
Families can expect automated attendance messages by email, phone, and text if a child is absent and their absence has not already been reported by a parent/guardian. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to report an absence or reply to the automated email or phone message.
What is the purpose of attendance notifications?
We realize that students may occasionally need to miss school for planned absences, illnesses, and appointments. However, when a student does not arrive at school or unexpectedly misses a portion of the school day, we are concerned and want to make sure you are aware that your child is absent.
How can I get push notifications?
Families who would also like a push notification can download the ParentVUE app and manage their notifications. If a child has an unreported absence when a teacher submits attendance, then a push notification will immediately be sent to the parent/guardian's mobile device.
Interested in push notifications? Simply download the ParentVUE app (iTunes app store or Google Play), enable push notifications in device settings and select attendance notifications through in-app settings. Once the app is downloaded, these instructions will help you complete the set-up.

Is your child absent today?
Families must notify the attendance office every day when a student is absent. If your student leaves school because they are ill, HIPAA regulations prevent our nurse from notifying attendance for the reason why a student is going home. If your student is not going to be at school please use “Report an Absence” on ParentVue or call the attendance line at 913/239-5505. Please do not email teachers, counselors, or the administrators about absences.
