Growth Mindset: Where do Mindsets Come From?
We are on the 2nd leg of the school year journey, the start of 2017! It's a time for goal setting and some may call them New Year's resolutions. Don't forget to wrap discussions about mindset into your goal setting. More than every students will need to continue developing a growth mindset to be at their very best. Also don't forget that the growth mindset applies to all of us to!! Below are a few thoughts from the, Mindset:
- "every word and action can send a message. It tells students how to think about themselves" The growth mindset message say, "You are a developing person and I am interested in your development."
- Listen to yourself and try each day to identify if you are sending fixed mindset messages to your students. This can be in your words, facial expressions, or body language.
- Be honest with a colleague when they are communicating a fixed mindset about themselves or their students.
- Have you stepped away from praising student intelligence? Are you still saying, "your so smart, so intelligent, etc." How do you begin to make the adjustment to praising hard work, effort, persistence.
- Are you using growth mindset phrases to stretch those students who get things easily or finish work faster than anyone else? Don't forget that these students also have room for growth and you must find ways to increase opportunities for them to learn and grow.
- Remember that children need timely, honest and constructive feedback, then help them to be better or complete the task better.
All of the above is pulled directly from, Mindset, chapter 7. I encourage you to reread this chapter and refocus on using growth mindset strategies to better your students and to better yourself.
