Literacy & SS with Mrs. Drayton
Writing - We finally published our narratives. Last week, we revised and edited. This week, we've been busy publishing and sharing our pieces with each other. To see a draft of your child's writing, just check out their writing journal. The graded piece will be coming home soon! Next week, we'll begin tackling informational pieces, but please encourage your child to continue writing narratives when they have time at home! They have lots of great ideas for topics in their journals that I'm sure they'll want to revisit them!
Word Study - Please encourage your child to study this week's affixes. The next test is on Friday! Remember, there is a link for flash cards on my website.
Reading - This week in reading, we're busy becoming better readers and researchers! My focus for this week is to help your child become better thinkers while reading informational text. We're investigating the multiple perspectives of people who moved west during the late 1800s. Based on their own knowledge and reading, students should decide if they should defend or refute the following claim:
All groups of people traveling to and settling in the West were able to achieve their goals without getting in each others’ ways.
The pictures below show students researching web based informational text and then responding on Edmodo.
Math & Science w/Ms. Cloyd
Math: We are finishing our work in Chapter 2 practicing strategies that can be used to multiply whole numbers. Our chapter test will be Friday, October 4. We have been reviewing all week.
Strategy of the Week: Your brain is an organizer. It organizes information as it stores that information. When a problem involves many pieces of information, your brain will have an easier time sorting through it if you make an organized list. A list helps you be sure you have thought of all of the possibilities without repeating any of them. Like drawing a picture or making a diagram, making an organized list helps your brain “see” the problem clearly and find a solution. Try making an organized list to solve this problem:
If you must use 15 or fewer coins, how many different combinations of coins can be used to make $1.00?
Science: In our study of oceanic landforms, we are trying to understand salinity, water pressure, and density. Our topics of discussions are tides, barrier islands, estuaries, beaches, inlets and human impact on the ocean.
The pictures below show some of our science investigations and notebooking.
