Style vs. Stance - Getting the Most Out of Your Writing
Grading Criteria (10 pts total)
- The student response accurately demonstrates with higher level. (most points)
- The student response accurately demonstrates...(fewer points)
- The student response partially demonstrates...(fewer points)
- The student response does not demonstrate...(no points)
1. Clearly address your ideas (2 pts)
- Awareness of task, purpose, audience
- Clear reasoning
- Logical organization
In other words, does your writing stick to the point, address the prompt, and - something I really like - come full circle? Do you make sure to wrap up by reminding the reader of where you started?
2. Incorporate the weekly readings, videos, and other course materials (3 pts)
- Understanding of text
- Relevant details
- Effectively applies key vocabulary
Don't just randomly throw stuff in, but use this terminology. For example, intersectionality is a really relevant word...how can you consider it as you write?
3. Critical analysis of weekly and overarching themes (4 pts)
- Original contribution and/or understanding as it relates to the weekly theme
- Specific text-based examples
- Support for your position and/or examples
#3 carries the heaviest point value, and I'm really looking at that because it's important, but #2 and #1 tie into it. Are you incorporating your own ideas along with the ideas you read/viewed? Are you giving specific examples? Are you SUPPORTING your position with clear reasoning...and are you making that very clear to the reader? It's not enough to just have an opinion - even if it's a great opinion, and a strong opinion, and you really love it - if you can't get it across effectively. A rant is just a rant if people can't find your point through all the words.
4. Sentence level: Grammar, spelling, punctuation, citation, etc. (1 pt)
- Clear presentation
- Command of grammar, mechanics, and usage
- Response protocol
Edit, edit, edit. It's silly to hit submit before reading through carefully one last time to check for spelling, grammar errors, etc. and also ask yourself, "Is this clear to someone who's not me?"
