Visual Arts Update from Suzanne

Hello Families,


Kindergarten will be creating a partner piece of artwork this week! They will be blending oil pastels to create new colors and then printing on top of the pastels. Look out for the work to be displayed soon and for some artwork being sent home before the break.


First grade is learning how to create a wire armiture for our model magic chameleon sculptures. The chameleons should be dried and painting began at the week's end!


Second graders will continue to sketch their self portrait from observation, and begin to draw and collage elements of Brooklyn places that have shaped their identities.


Third graders created innovative sculptures as part of their Buddy project. This week they will chose a color or color scheme to paint the bodies that will represent where they imagine the chameleon to be camouflaged near.

Sponsor A Family Holiday Gift Drive (Deadline 12/19)

For the third year in a row, we have organized a Sponsor-A-Family Gift Drive to support families in need in our community this holiday season. With the growing size of our school, we have decided to focus on supporting families in our school community this year.


We are grateful for any donations that you are able to make, no matter how small. Donations (gifts should be unwrapped) can be brought to the Compass Main Office (Room 431, 4th floor) on or before Friday, December 19, 2016. Please click HERE to sign up to provide a gift for the drive. The gift drive will end on December 19th.


Donations can be made via check (made out to "Friends Of Compass Charter School", checks can be left in the FSC mailbox in room 431) or via Square Cash to the “cashtag" $FSCCompass (you can also go to this website to make a square deposit. https://cash.me/$FSCCompass). Please write Holidaysponsor in the notes section. Monetary donations will be used to purchase items that are not signed up for during the drive or to purchase gift cards for families.

FSC Leadership Board

We are looking for people from our talented, dedicated, amazing community to join our FSC Leadership Board. The term is January through December 2017. Please nominate yourself or someone else using this form. The DEADLINE to submit the nomination form is Thursday, December 15th. We look forward to hearing from you!

Here is more information on the positions:

Compass Family School Collaborative Committees and Responsibilities
The FSC Leadership Board Members are expected to attend FSC Leadership Board Meetings and All-School FSC Meetings and to take a leadership role within the school community. Being a part of leadership is a great way to help to set the course for the FSC, get to know other Compass parents/caregivers, and play a crucial role in enriching the community at Compass.

Committee chairs have different responsibilities, depending upon the committee. In general, they’ll be responsible for oversight and coordination of the activities within their committee, and for reporting back about these activities to the Board.

Programming (2 chairs)
The Programming Committee oversees all the “free” programming, including:
-Fall Festival
-Eco Fair
-Literacy Initiatives/Committee
-Field Trips
-Parent Workshops
-Dance or Movie Night
-Talent Show
-Class Photos

Fundraising (2 chairs)
The Fundraising Committee oversees all projects and events that raise money for the school and for FSC initiatives, including:
-Winter Fling
-Gala
-Bake Sales
-Smaller initiatives such as amazon, box tops, tea collection, Square 1
-Grants

Community (2 chairs)
The Community Committee helps with projects that address need within our school community and also help to do outreach about school events and initiatives, including:
-Community Closet
-Holiday Drive
-Outreach
-Health and Food

Other Board Members. These chairs don’t necessarily need a whole committee, but rather require a strong representative on the board.

Treasury (2 chairs)
-Duties include tracking the budget, reimbursing families/staff, counting and collecting money, setting up payment systems, etc.

Communications (2 chairs)
-Duties include writing emails and crafting newsletters on behalf of the FSC, monitoring and responding to correspondence that comes to FSC mailbox, updating the Compass website with new upcoming events and other info relating to the FSC.

Class Parent Liaison (this person would be one of the Communications Co-Chairs)
-Duties include communicating with all class parents
-Helping to organize Holiday Gift Collection and End-of-Year Gift Collection
-Point person to organize Teacher Appreciation Week

FSC Co-Chairs (2 people)
-General oversight and leadership, work with school leadership to set vision and direction for the FSC
-Set and maintain FSC calendar
-Communicate with School Leadership
-Attend bi-monthly FSC Leadership Board meetings as well as bi-monthly all-school FSC meetings; lead all-school meetings
-Attend events; help recruit parents for events
-Organize end of year picnic

Other:
After School. This is a separate committee, not under the umbrella of the FSC. It is headed by Todd Sutler, with several Compass parents. Please contact Todd Sutler or Erin Hayes if you are interested in being involved with After School.

Operations Update


Lost & Found Items To Be Donated- Look Through Before Break!

Our Lost & Found bins have numerous sweaters, Compass t-shirts, winter coats, many hats, gloves, scarves, lunch bags, jewelry, water bottles and other random items.


In fact, it has grown too big! When we return in January, we will wash and donate all items to the Community Closet. Please thoroughly look through the bins (located at the top of the Compass stairwell) in the next 2 weeks!

Reminder of Early Pick Up Procedures

We understand that there will be occasions that you need to pick your child up from school early. If you need to pick your child up from school earlier than 3:45 (or 12:45 on Wednesdays), you must first sign him/her out by coming to the Compass Main Office (Room 431). Main Office staff will give you a pass to give to your child's teachers. Teachers will not release children in their room without seeing this pass!


Changes in Afternoon Transportation

If there is a change to your normal afternoon transportation (for example, your child normally rides the bus but will be picked up), please let Laurie know via email at least 24 hours in advance so that the bus/ after school/ pick up list can be adjusted and communicated to the teachers. If you are not able to give 24 hours notice, your child will be on his/her normal list. If this is the bus list, you will need to check your child out from the bus captain. Bus captains are as follows:

Community Closet

Please take a look at the info above about our Community Closet. The Community Closet is a free store that is available for families to use as needed. The closet is open on Wednesdays and is also open by appointment. Please reach out to Stephanie, our Community Support Coordinator, for more information or to schedule an appointment. 2 More Volunteers Needed for our Holiday Gift Wrapping Fundraiser at Greenlight Bookstore

Holiday Gift Wrapping Fundraiser at Greenlight Bookstore on December 22nd, 2016

Each year, Greenlight Bookstore invites local schools and other nonprofit organizations to have volunteers wrap holiday gifts at the bookstore and collect tips on the busiest days during the holiday season. In addition to helping out the hardworking bookstore staff, this is a great opportunity for fundraising and awareness-raising for our school. Compass will receive money from tips from wrapping gifts and we will also receive a gift card with 20% of the total sales from the day.

Interested in helping? Here are some ways to help out:

  • We need two volunteers at a time (no more, no less) signed up during the giftwrapping times listed. Please sign up for a volunteer slot HERE.
  • We need one alternate volunteer for each time slot. This person will be on call in case one of the volunteers is unable to come at the last minute. Please sign up HERE to be an alternate.
  • If any volunteers are under 18, Greenlight requires that there be 1 adult and 1 child giftwrapping at a time.
  • Volunteers should plan to arrive about 10 minutes before their scheduled shift.
  • If you aren't interested in wrapping gifts and/or all of the volunteer slots are taken, please stop by Greenlight Bookstore to shop for books on the evening of December 22nd. 20% of the proceeds will go back to our school!

Our Healthy School Fund: December

If you have not already contributed to the Healthy School Fund for September and October, please do so as soon as possible. We ask that you contribute $30 per child per month. Directions for payment are listed below. Please let us know if you have questions. If you need support in making contributions to the Healthy School Fund, please let us know and we will do our best to support you.
