The Madison School Newsletter / January 23, 2015
It’s a busy time of year at Madison Elementary! Please allow me to take the opportunity to inform you of some of the major initiatives and events happening in the near future.
Institute Days… The elementary staff around District 200 are lucky enough to have two professional development days. On Jan. 16, Madison staff learned about Google Classroom and other Google Apps for Education. On Feb. 27, all District 200 elementary staff will engage in grade level specific, professional development provided by District 200 leadership.
PARCC… Our standardized testing schedule will be very different this year as the State of Illinois has adopted PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) to replace the ISAT exam. Since the PARCC assessments are internet based and require students to use district technology, we will be spreading our assessment schedule over a three-week period from Mar 9 - Mar 27. It is VERY important that students in grades 3-5 be present during their assigned testing dates. If any students are planning to miss school the days before Spring Break, it is absolutely imperative that parents let me know as soon as possible as I finalize the assessment schedule.
Celebrating 50 Years… Madison is celebrating 50 years of excellent education this year! We will be celebrating and recognizing each decade of our history over the next few months. This month we are celebrating the 60s! Jan 27 will be “60s Day”. Students and staff are encouraged to dress in 60s attire and we will have a special assembly to educate students about life at Madison and in our community during the 1960s.
Thank you for all you do to partner with us in your children’s education,
Tim Callahan, Principal
Enjoy pancakes with your Madison family
Madison’s annual pancake breakfast is tomorrow, Sat., Jan. 24, from 8:30-10 a.m. Bring in your gently used books and swap them for "new to you" books. Cost at the door is $5 per person; $20 per family maximum. If you've misplaced the flyer that went home earlier this week, you can find it here. Questions? contact Monica Fahey at firstname.lastname@example.org. Enjoy a fun breakfast with Madison families and staff!
Nominating committee to be elected at February PTA meeting
By the end of June, Janet Mathis, Robyn Beres and Amy Fiorato will have served their terms as co-president, vice president of ways and means, and secretary. We will be looking to fill these positions. If you're interested in helping to find people to serve in these roles, please contact Janet Mathis,email@example.com or Julie Ippolito, firstname.lastname@example.org.
We need five people to be on the nominating committee, plus two alternates. Nominating committee members must have been a member of the PTA for at least 30 days by the time of the Feb. 19 meeting. The nominating committee will report its nominees at the March general membership meeting.
Kindergarten Roundup is coming!
If you have a child who will be five on or before Sept. 1, 2015, we will be hosting a Parent Meeting on Mon., March 2 at 7:00 p.m. Pre-registration will begin at 6:30 p.m. This “parent only” event is a great way to become acquainted with kindergarten at Madison Elementary, meet the staff members, and have your questions answered. Please pass this information to any friends or neighbors with a potential kindergartener. Please call the school office at 630-682-2095 to add your child’s name to our kindergarten list.

PARCC testing questions answered
Students in grades 3-8 and 11 will be taking the Illinois mandated PARCC tests starting in March. PARCC replaces the ISAT test previously used. Faith Dahlquist, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services will give District 200 parents information about the tests and answer your questions.
This informational forum will be held at Wiesbrook Elementary School on February 5, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in the LLC.
If you have questions, please contact Michelle Brejla, Wiesbrook PTA President, email@example.com.
Please also email firstname.lastname@example.org to let them know if you plan to attend.
Madison Cares to make blankets; collect birthday bag donations
Don't miss our first 2015 Madison Cares project on Mon., Jan. 26 in the LLC. First through fifth grade students will be making fleece blankets for Project Linus. Please have your student join us during the recess portion of their lunch hour.
We are still collecting items for “birthday bag” donations that benefit the People’s Resource Center in Wheaton. We are looking for the following items: birthday candles, packages of balloons, streamers, birthday plates/napkins and small party favors. We will also accept gently used birthday themed gift bags.

Multicultural Day help needed
Yes… we're already looking ahead to next fall! So many volunteers have already said "yes" for next school year's Multicultural Day, but we need a couple of people who are willing to put it all together. If you'd like to make a huge difference in the lives of Madison students, please contact Julie Ippolito, email@example.com, or Janet Mathis, firstname.lastname@example.org.
Parents and staff: join Madison PTA Facebook group
With 170 members and growing, Madison PTA Wheaton, IL Facebook group has become a good way to share information about Madison PTA happenings. Any Madison parent/guardian or staff member may join the closed group. You'll find fun pictures, reminders and news. Madison Memos continues to be Madison PTA's main source for information, as it reaches all parents and staff.
Upgrading to a new tablet? Donate your old one to Madison
Madison teachers have found many ways for refurbished iPads/other tablets /handheld devices to complement the curriculum. Simply take your old device into Madison’s office during school hours of 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the staff will make sure it’s put to good use in the classroom.
