THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous monuments in New York, the United States and around the world. It was a gift from the French to the Americans in 1886 to commemorate the centenary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States and as a sign of friendship between the two nations. It was inaugurated 28th October 1886 in the presence of the American president of the time, Grover Cleveland. The statue is the work of the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and the internal structure was designed by engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel.
It became a symbol in the United States and represents freedom and emancipation with respect to oppression. It measures 93 m, from the ground to the torch.
CENTRAL PARK
Central Park is a public urban park. It has a rectangular shape and approximate dimensions of 4000 x 800 m, being larger than two of the smallest nations in the world. It was built because the city was growing rapidly and there were not enough green spaces
It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Much of the park seems natural, but there are artificial lakes, two ice skating rinks and grass areas used for sports activities.
BROOKLYN BRIDGE
Brooklyn Bridge connects Manhattan and Brooklyn. It is one of the largest suspension bridges, measuring 1825 meters long. It was built 2sd January 1870, and ended thirteen years later, 23th May 1883, when it was opened to the public.
The first day was crossed by a total of more than 1800 vehicles and 150,000 people. In its construction, 15.1 million dollars were spent and 27 people died.
MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
EMPIRE STATE BUILDING
It was the tallest building in the world for more than forty years. It was designed by William F. Lamb. It took a year and forty-five days to build. It has 443.2 meters high and 102 floors.
The biggest disaster in the history of the Empire State was in 1945, when a US Army B25 bomber crashed into the north facade of the building. You can visit the Empire State Building's observation deck on the 86th floor from where you have a magnificent view over the city of New York.
