General News! Week of Feb. 27th- March 3rd
Happy Monday!
Hope you had a chance to enjoy some of the beautiful weather we have been having lately...spring is in the air early this year! With that in mind, here is just a quick reminder that we are rapidly approaching the end of this 3rd quarter. Many students seem to be realizing that the end is in sight, and are getting focused on their grades and classes. Unfortunately, we have a few who need that subtle reminder from home as well as here. Thanks for hanging in there with us. This quarter's grades close out on March 10th.
It is never too early to begin preparing for the End of Grade assessments. The GDOE site has the following resources for parents.
· Grade 6 EOG Study/Resource Guide
· Grade 7 EOG Study/Resource Guide
· Grade 8 EOG Study/Resource Guide
The chart below shows the content weights for each of the tests.

Science- Mrs. Allen
Math- Mrs. McKinney
Math this week is scatterplots and the line of best fit. Students will have homework every night and they need to have it completed before they come back to class. Tuesday the students will take the third Mathematics Inventory to see if they have made progress this year. I am positive that they will all show some growth. Students will have a mastery assessment on 3/7.
In the next week students will receive their recommended class for the high school. The math teachers were given a rubric to use to choose the best placement for the students. The areas that were looked at were 7th grade math EOG score, attendance, current yearly score, and if they were in math support this year. To be recommended for honors, students needed 15 of 16 possible points. A B student with 10 absences and a level 2 from last year not in support this year could either be in yearlong math (coordinate algebra and Algebra with support) or just in coordinate algebra. Some students were recommended for the yearlong because they do not retain material for long periods of time and I was apprehensive to put them in a situation where they had no math courses for six to nine months.
Social Studies- Mr. Salser
Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
This Week In Language Arts:
We are beginning our week with a Reading Inventory Checkpoint. This test will hopefully show some positive results from all the hard work they have been putting in. Our goal is to have everyone on the team show some growth!
The Boy In The Striped Pajamas is well under way. We have met some of our main characters, and are already invested in their journey. Our focus will continue to be on our standards for interpreting text, text structure, mood, key ideas, inference, characterization, reading for information, supporting a conclusion.
We have had a couple of weeks of our "5 A Day Review". These lessons will help reinforce many of the various grammar skills that we utilize regularly in our reading and writing. Last Friday they were asked to show what they know...some of them have a very strong grasp on these, but others are definitely lost. As I have said before, the more actively they participate in our practices, the stronger their personal skill sets will be. We will take another quick check point quiz at the end of this week week to help show areas of mastery.
TweenTribune, will continue this week. Students are being asked to read 6 articles each week by Friday at 3 pm. Students who do not complete the assignment will not receive credit. While TweenTribune is the assigned task, please keep in mind that the NewsELA offers terrific practice for your children...especially those that don't have anything to work on at home!
FYI...Book 4 of our independent choice reading is due by this Friday, March 3rd.
