Whakatau
We began our week on Monday morning with a very special whakatau to welcome our 18 new students and their families to Pinehill School. It was wonderful to spend time with our new families afterwards in the staffroom and to further connect. It is so important to us that your move to our school is as easy as possible. If there is anything you need to know, please do pop in and ask. No question is ever too small.
New Enrolments
Enrolments for 2023 are now being taken at the office. If you know of any families who have a four year old who will be starting school next year and live in the Pinehill School zone, please encourage them to contact the office regarding their child’s enrolment. This will really support us with our class organisation for next year. Please see the school website for zoning and enrolment criteria details. All our enrolment information can be downloaded and found on the school website https://pinehill.school.nz/our-school/
Athletics
The weather today, although overcast, provided perfect cooler conditions for our Year 4-6 annual athletics day to take place.
The morning started with a variety of rotation activities including shot put, long jump, high jump, discus and sprints. It was great to see the students putting their learning and practice into place with each event. The event has been a great success and the support of teachers coordinating their events, recording, timing and general organisation has contributed to such a fabulous day. Thank you to the parents who came along to cheer and support.
Term 4 Uniform layers
With the changes in weather patterns, please remind your children to wear our school uniform in layers. As Term 4 is a Summer term, the short sleeved top should be the first uniform layer students put on, followed by the longer sleeved top/sweatshirt. Singlets, thermal tops or extra longer layers are not needed in Term 4. Although it may be cooler in the morning, it does warm up quickly by morning tea or lunch time. Most days over the last week have been as warm as 24 degrees by mid day. Many of our children are feeling the heat and really struggling with this, especially if they have one long sleeved uniform layer and are unable to take a layer off to cool down. When children are too hot and can’t cool down, it is too hard for them to learn and be engaged in the classroom.
We do have a range of short sleeved uniform tops available in our second hand collection that can be purchased for Term 4 or alternatively new short sleeved uniform tops are available for purchase at Janbells in Mairangi Bay. We appreciate your support with this.
Please see the following education quote:
‘The average body temperature for a human is 37ºC and our brains work hard to make sure our bodies maintain this temperature. To do this, our brain makes our body burn glucose to warm up or ventilate and sweat to cool down. So depending on whether its summer or winter, uncomfortable temperatures will cause a distraction to learners.Temperature impacts student’s learning ability and also affects numerous other mental and physical activities. When temperatures are not ideal, the brain gets constant interruptions from the body signaling it to readjust to the temperature, making it hard to focus on the learning task at hand.’
Term 4 - Let’s wear layers, short sleeved uniform top is required for Term 4!

Room 10’s lesson last week focused on mindfulness. They made paper boats to aid them as they explored meditation and how the experience made them feel. They decorated their boats with colours, symbols or pictures that helped them reset or stay calm.
The text below is a copy of the meditation text. Just reading it made me feel calm and connected. I hope you find the text calming too.
“Once you have your boat, lay down with a pillow or jumper propped under your head so that you can look at your belly. Place your boat on your belly allowing it to balance, and then rest your hands beside you on the floor.
Without changing your breathing, feel as the air comes into your nose and flows down all the way into your belly, making the boat on your belly rise.
Watch as you rock your boat with your breath. Your belly is like the waves on the ocean, constantly rising and falling as you breathe in and out.
Sometimes the waves can be big, almost knocking your boat off balance. Sometimes they’re small and barely affect your boat.
But just like in the ocean, underneath the constantly moving waves lies the quiet and calm/
mauritau ocean floor. Try to feel the back of your body, lying heavy and calm/mauritau on the floor; like the ocean floor.
Imagine your whole body as the ocean, and notice how every part of you is involved in breathing, not just your belly.
Now keep watching and feeling your boat rock up and down with your breath. The sound of your breath is like the surf of the ocean. Every time your mind gets distracted, just bring your attention back to the rocking of your boat.
When you are ready you can set your boat aside and take with you the feeling of calm/mauritau as you slowly roll to the side, get up and go on your way with a smile on your mind.”
Thanks for sharing Room 10
