PTA NEWS FLASH
Indian Knoll Elementary
Letter from the Principal
Happy February Firebirds!
We are well into the second semester and are very busy at Indian Knoll. I am so
proud of our IKES students and enjoy celebrating successes along the way. We
have many academic and behavioral rewards in place to positively reinforce our
students. We are hosting quarterly honor roll assemblies for 4 th and 5 th graders as
well as having school-wide house meetings to recognize attendance, academic
achievement, and outstanding character. Our children are also recognized on the
morning news with “firebird feathers” and for other accomplishments. Lastly,
students are highlighted on social media through Facebook posts, Instagram
pictures and Twitter tweets. If your child is participating in a state or national
event/competition, please forward the details so we can highlight those
accomplishments too!
We will soon receive our district staffing allotments for the 2019-2020 school year
and be working to develop class lists. We pride ourselves in creating a warm
environment for all students with teachers who compliment their learning style.
The teachers, counselors, and administrators will all take an active role in the
2019-20 class placement. We need to consider student services (gifted, special
education, speech, EIP, ESOL) as well as peer compatibility, boy/girl ratios, and
learning styles. This a very thorough and long process that we take very seriously.
Due to the complex nature of placement and with 950 students, we cannot take
specific teacher requests. All of our teachers are highly qualified and very child-
centered. We are blessed to have such dedicated professionals at IKES. Thanks in
advance for trusting us with this decision and the education of your child.

SMILE!! It's National Dental Health Month!
February is National Children's Dental Health Month. This month-long national health observance brings together thousands of dedicated professionals, healthcare providers, and educators to promote the benefits of good oral health to children, their caregivers, teachers and many others.
This year's NCDHM campaign slogan is "Brush and clean in between to build a healthy smile". In honor of this year's initiative, we wanted to give you a few best practices that we recommend here at Cherokee Children's Dentistry.
1. Brush your teeth TWICE a day! After breakfast, especially when consuming drinks that contain sugar, such as orange juice and milk, then again before bed.
2. Floss ONCE a day! Sugar bugs love to feast on the sugars that get caught in between your teeth and flossing is the ONLY way to remove them.
3. Eat a healthy diet that limits sugary beverages and snacks. Fruit, vegetables and water are great to snack on in between meals. Treats are ok, but try to stay away from ooey, gooey, sticky candies that can get stuck deep in the grooves of the teeth.
4. Visit your dentist twice a year for regular check ups and cleanings. Preventive care is the key to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums!
