Surveyworks
SurveyWorks: Let your voice be heard!
We want to hear from you! As a member of our school community, your feedback is very important. That is why we are asking you to complete this survey, which will ask for your perceptions on the school safety, the school environment and more. This survey is completely anonymous and will help our school leadership make informed decisions about the future of Hathaway. This is an excellent opportunity to let your voice be heard!
To complete the survey, follow this link and choose “Howard Hathaway School” from the drop down menu. Families with multiple children only need to take the survey once, unless you feel your answers would be very different for each child.
Please complete the survey before March 10th.
We look forward to hearing from you!

Important Information
There have been some cases of Streptococcal throat infection in the school. Here are some important signs and symptoms to look out for during this cold, flu and strep throat season!
Watch your child for signs of a sore throat and other signs of strep
(headache, fever, and stomachache, swollen and tender neck glands).
Please see your health care provider if your child develops a sore throat
or any of these signs of strep infection. If strep is found, your child
will be treated with an antibiotic.
Strep throat is a sore throat caused by Streptococcus bacteria that are
passed around through nose and mouth droplets. It is very common in
children. Most sore throats are caused by viruses and are not treated
with antibiotics. Strep throat must be treated with antibiotics to
prevent spread to others and to prevent rare but serious complications.
Children who have been diagnosed with a strep infection may return to
school after taking medication for at least 24 hours and fever is gone.
We can all work together to prevent the spread of strep bacteria by
taking the following simple precautions:
1. Thoroughly wash your hands and your child’s after wiping noses and before eating
and preparing food.
2. Wash dishes carefully in hot soapy water or a dishwasher.
3. Never allow the sharing of food or allow children to share cups, spoons, or toys
that are put in the mouth.
4. Remind your child to wash his or her hands before eating and after using a tissue
while at school.
5. Tissues should be disposed of after a single use
If your child does contract a strep infection, please inform me as soon
as possible to enable me to monitor the cases.
Thank you for your attention to this important health matter.

From the Nurse
Is it COVID-19, the flu, RSV or a common cold?
Let's look at the viruses that cause four common childhood illnesses—COVID-19, flu, the common cold and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
All of them share some similar symptoms. This can make it hard to tell them apart. Here are some clues that help your pediatrician figure out what kind of respiratory illness is making your child sick.
COVID-19 symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, congestion, shortness of breath, sore throat, headache, sneezing, vomiting/diarrhea, or loss of taste/smell. COVID-19 symptoms can appear 2 to 14 days after infection.
Flu symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, stuffy nose, shortness of breath, sore throat, headache. Symptoms show up about 1 to 4 days after being exposed to a sick person. The infection can cause pneumonia.
RSV can cause a fever, cough, fatigue, stuffy nose, shortness of breath, sneezing, fast/short breaths, flaring nostrils, wheezing and grunting, poor feeding/no appetite, and head bobbing or chest caving in between and under ribs with each breath. Symptoms of RSV usually are worst on days 3 through 5 and last about 5 to 7 days. The infection causes a cold, which may be followed by bronchiolitis or pneumonia. RSV is common in late fall through early spring. In 2021, however, the pandemic caused a strange thing to happen. The number of RSV infections and hospital rates went up in summer 2021 instead. Nearly all children get RSV by their second birthday.
Common cold symptoms may include fever, cough, fatigue, stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing. Colds are upper respiratory infections that can be caused by many viruses. A few common cold viruses are rhinovirus, adenovirus, human coronavirus, human parainfluenza virus, human metapneumovirus and RSV. Healthy children get about 6 colds a year.
Fast Facts From the Nurse
Pink Eye - If suspected in school, student will need to be dismissed and must be on an antibiotic for 24 hours prior to returning to school.
Flu/Fever - Student must be fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT use of tylenol or ibuprofen before returning to school.
Vomiting/Diarrhea - Student must experience 24 hours with no vomiting or diarrhea before returning to school.
Head Lice - Student may remain in school, however parents will be notified and be given the option to dismiss student for treatment. It is highly recommended that the student receive treatment prior to returning to school. It is essential that backpacks, jackets, hats, are washed and house linens and stuffed animals washed 7-10 days following treatment. If nits or lice are still present, it is strongly recommended completing another treatment.
Colds - Students may come to school with a cold, cough or congestion. Encourage blowing nose, covering mouth when coughing and washing hands.
COVID - Please notify the nurse. Student will quarantine for 5 days from start of symptoms. The student may return after the 5 days and it will be parents' choice whether the student wears a mask or not for another 5 days. Masks are recommended but not required.
Strep Throat - Students may come to school after being fever free for 24 hours and on an antibiotic for 24 hours.
For all illnesses, if your student was seen by a physician please get a note excusing them from school. Thank you!
