Music Program Information

Dear Parents,

We are very excited to show off the hard work your students have been doing in music class this year with a performance!

The second grade concert will begin promptly at 7:00 PM on Thursday, December 18th in the CRES gymnasium. Students should report to their homeroom teacher’s classroom at 6:45 PM.

The performance will last about 20-30 minutes. Students should wear semi-formal attire they can move freely in such as polos, dress shirts and slacks for the boys, and dresses or skirts for the girls. Any shoes are fine. If you have any questions, please e-mail me at or call (317) 594-4170 and ask to be connected to the music teacher.

Reading Workshop

We are starting Unit 4: Non-Fiction/Informational Text. We are going to learn how we appropriate non-fiction text differently than fiction text. We don't always read non-fiction text beginning to end. We use the text features to help us locate information we want to read using the index, table of contexts, and headings. We will learn about non-fiction text features focusing on: table of contexts, index, glossary, maps, photographs, headings, subheadings, and bold words. We will also be recording What We Learn and our Still Wondering as we are reading non-fiction text.

Word Study

No Word Study this week. Students are being assessed over all 50 sight words we have learned this semester :)

Writing Workshop

We are finishing our Unit of Study - 'How To' Writing. In this unit, students will choose something they would like to teach or share with other students that they think they are an expert on.

Lessons in this unit include brainstorming a list of things students can teach others and make a list of materials needed. Then students will use pictures and words to share the steps the reader would need to follow. After sharing the directions with a partner, writers will change or add steps that will make them easier to understand.

Students will learn to:

· Write a how-to piece using a familiar topic.

· Use transition words to make directions easier to follow.

· Share writing with a partner and revise steps to make ideas more specific.

· Use precise words or description to help the reader follow the directions.

This unit gives second graders an opportunity for real world writing. You can help your child by sharing activities where you follow written directions. Using a recipe when cooking with your child is a perfect way to practice using step-by-step directions. As you are sampling the food, talk about pictures or extra steps that would have made the directions easier for both of you to understand.

We will are reviewing Adding and Subtracting WITH and WITHOUT regrouping. We will have a Quiz over them on Thursday.
