Whitford Catholic Primary School
Newsletter 25 - 21 August 2019
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Strategic Planning: 2020 - 2022
Strategic planning is an essential part of school planning and is a requirement of all schools. Throughout 2019, the staff have reflected on our previous Strategic Plan (2016 -2018) and are now in the process of gathering data, monitoring progress and assessing the areas that may require further attention.
With this in mind, on behalf of the School Board, I ask families to take a few minutes to complete this quick survey to help inform the future direction of our school and best educational outcomes for our children. Thanking you in anticipation as you click on the following link to input your ideas.

Care for our Common Home
Last Monday our staff was involved in a fabulous professional development centred on Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato si. The day offered us a powerful moral and spiritual imperative for environmental and social action in regard to creation and committing to effective global agreements.
This was the perfect opportunity to think about what we, as individuals and a collective school community, are doing to care for each other and educate for a compassionate relationship between humanity and the environment. Thank you to the group of parents who are already assisting in our first step of becoming a Waste Wise School. Watch this space for more information!
First Holy Communion
Congratulations to Mr Balding, Mrs Hopkins, Mrs Hunt and their amazing young students who participated fully in the Eucharist for the first time over the weekend. They are an awesome group and it was such a pleasure and proud moment to share in this special day. Thank you to parents, Fr Cyprian and all staff for supporting the children.
Whitty’s Dads Need Your Help this Saturday!
The Whitty’s Dads group are running the Bunnings BBQ this Saturday and are short of a few volunteers to help out around midday. They would really appreciate some extra hands to help out. If you can spare a hour or two please go to https://www.trybooking.com/BCJSO
and fill in your details.
May the Lord bring us peace and continue to give us wisdom, compassion and the courage to reach out in support of each other.
Kindest regards with many blessings
Tamara McGougan
Principal

Keeping Children Safe
In light of last week's Child Protection Alert in Beldon, teachers have reminded students of ways to keep safe and I urge parents to reinforce this message at home.
Here are some simple suggestions to help your child stay safe. Please ask your child to:
- Always travel in company
- Walk on the right hand side of the road so you face oncoming traffic
- Wherever possible, leave space between yourself and the roadway
- Stay in areas that are well lit
- Stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden from view (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres) and plan trips to avoid such locations
- Be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably
- If you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number
- If a passing car stops nearby never get too close
- Do not hesitate to run from a situation in which you feel at risk
- Provide this advice to brothers and sisters, especially if younger
- Report suspicious behaviour to parents, school and the police.
- If you can get it safely, try to photograph or remember the number plate of the car and report number plates of cars and the clothing or distinguishing features of individuals to police.
Please remember to report anything suspicious to the school and the police – call 131 444 or the local station to report an incident to police (and only use 000 in an emergency) or 1800 333 000 to reach Crime Stoppers.

Keeping Safe Protective Behaviours Workshop - Thursday 12th September
The Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia is committed to child protection strategies and procedures to ensure the care, safety and protection of all children in Catholic schools. A key principle of the policy is that all children have the right to a thorough and systematic education in all aspects of personal safety. This should be done in partnership with their parents/caregivers.
Parents, Guardians and Caregivers are invited to attend a Keeping Safe Protective Behaviours Workshop 6-8pm, Thursday 12th September in the Library.
This interactive and informative workshop will provide parents and caregivers with an overview of the Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum that is implemented at Whitford Catholic Primary School as well as information on how you can reinforce these personal safety messages at home.
Presenter: Justine O'Malley (BA Ed, Masters SW) Child Safe Consultant, CEWA
If you wish to attend this important and informative Workshop please confirm your attendance via the form on School Stream. There is no cost for the Workshop but confirming your attendance allows us to plan for numbers.

Tickets are now on sale from Ticketek. We are performing in the matinee show at 12.30pm. Our school will be closest to the Beethoven section (green) and are standing at Podium 2. My understanding from information I have received is that section 215 would provide the best opportunity to see your child performing.
We also have 2 tickets available for $25 each. If you would like to purchase these please contact me on the email below.
Please email me (steven.ostaszewskyj@cewa.edu.au) if you would like to ask a question. I will shortly be sending extra information regarding the performance home with your child.
