Meet Kioni ('Kentucky') Gallahue
Kioni, or Kentucky, Gallahue graduated from Frankfort High School in 1998. Kioni came to Frankfort High School from Good Shepherd School as a 9th-grade student. After high school, Kioni attended Georgia Southern University, obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management. Kioni always had an interest in construction, working at Frank Shelton Construction while a student at Frankfort High School. While a student at Georgia Southern, Kioni’s friends gave him the nickname ‘Kentucky’, because they always mispronounced his name.
Kentucky and Derby
In 2016, Kioni and his dog, Derby, moved to San Diego, California, to live with his sister. While in San Diego, Kioni desired to learn to surf. He bought his first surfboard and took it and Derby to Ocean Beach Dog Beach. Kentucky assumed that Derby would play with the other dogs while he learned to surf. This was not the case at all. Derby kept following Kentucky into the surf, so he picked him up, put him on the board, and pushed him into a wave. Derby rode the wave to the shore and returned to the surf for more. Kentucky and Derby have been competing in Dog Surf Competitions up and down the coast of California and Hawaii.
Kentucky and Derby were discovered by a casting producer on Instagram and invited to be a part of the show “The Pack.” The show was designed for dogs and owners to travel worldwide to win half a million dollars. Kentucky and Derby lost in the finals by 7 seconds. Still, they were lucky to visit locations such as Los Angeles, Mexico City, Costa Rica, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Paris, and London while on the show. The show gave them enough exposure to start their brand, Derby California. They sell shirts, hoodies, and merchandise made so that an owner and their dog can match.
Kentucky loves sharing Derby with the world. Their goal is to put a smile on everyone’s faces. Kentucky and Derby are a certified therapy dog team visiting schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. Kentucky enjoyed taking Derby to school so much that he wrote a children’s book about how he and Derby met, moved to California, and started surfing together. The book's title is The Adventures of Derby California - Derby Learns to Surf.
Memories of Frankfort High
In Kioni’s words, “Frankfort High was special to me because of the size of the school. You were familiar with everyone, both students and faculty. My dad sent me to Frankfort High instead of Franklin County because he felt like high school kids can fall between the cracks and not get what they need. In a small school, I was able to get to know everyone. I still have good friends attending Good Shepherd and Frankfort High, and I love returning to Frankfort to see them. I also loved all Frankfort High traditions – the Frankfort High cheers, senior clap-out, and the homecoming parade. As a student, you don’t truly appreciate it. It’s when you see your friends' kids enjoying the same traditions that you did that it comes full circle.”
While in high school, Kioni was a member of the soccer, basketball, cross country, and track and field teams. While Kioni was in high school, the principal was Mr. Mont, whom Kioni thought was awesome. Kioni remembers how personable the teachers were and how much they worked to see their students succeed.
Kentucky and Derby will be at Second Street School on November 3, 2023, to share their book with our students.
