Backgorund and Culture

It starts out in Salem, Massachusetts, in the spring of the year 1692. The house stood in the "town" but we today would hardly call it a village. They don't celebrate Christmas or a holiday from work meant only that they must concentrate even more upon prayer. The edge of the wilderness was close by, the American stretched endlessly west, and it was full of mystery for them. It was dark and threatening. They believed, in short, that they held their steady hands the candle that would light the world. Very few indians were converted and the Salem fold believed that the virgin forest was the Devil's last presereve. They were a dedicated fold, by and large, and they had to be to survive the life they had chosen or been born into this country

Parris's treatment of Titubia shows his anger and his selfish character. It also show Titubia is powerless. Parris and Abigail are both trying to protect their reputations that they have. Parris is trying to stop Susanna from talking about what she seen in the house, then Abigail is trying to stop her from saying what she expierced in the forest. Witchcraft wasn't just a sin, it also threatens Parris's job. To save his job and everything he has to deny the rumors going arounf about him. Abigail was said to be a liar and Mary as frightened of her. Mary believe there wasn't any real witchcraft.
