The Sandcastle Times - July 2019
"Building Strong Foundations for Lifetime of Learning"
A message from Holly Bevilacqua, COO
With summer underway and the smell of sunscreen filling the halls, we are excited for the next month ahead. The sun is finally shining! Our Camps have kicked off the summer with a bang and have lots of upcoming adventures to keep them busy.
In the rest of the center, each of our classrooms have worked hard to incorporate some really cool and fun activities for their students. To stay abreast of upcoming activities please refer to the Monthly Calendars or the Carelot website. We would love to have you join us for a planned activity. Or, feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you would like to just come visit or even share a talent with the children.
Camp: Please be sure to wear your colored camp t-shirts for any field trips! This includes Beach trips! Make sure you label your child's shirt with a permanent marker. We love family chaperones too! If you would like to join us on any trips, feel free to let us know on your child’s permission slips.
Learning about What grows on a farm! YUM Corn!
Cooling off on a hot day! Don't forget water play clothes
Reading time with a friend is the best!
Summer tips and reminders
We are always looking for parent/family volunteers. Come and share a favorite story, make a snack or craft with the children, or just come and spend time in your child’s classroom!
When going on vacation this summer please inform the teachers of the days you will be out so they can plan accordingly. Thank you!
Please remember to call the center by 9:00 am if your child will be absent or in late. This helps us plan our staffing for the day. Thank you!
Water play has officially begun in our centers. The children really look forward to these days so please make sure your child has a complete set of water play clothes here so everyone can participate. This includes a bathing suit/extra clothes, water shoes, & a towel. We do water play at least a couple of times during the week as part of our gross motor/sensory curriculum! Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your child before they arrive each day! Paba Free and SPF of 15 or higher please! Water play occurs on various days depending on the weekly schedule and weather so please have your child’s water play items at school each week! Check with your child's classroom for details.
Food for thought!
4th of July Recipe!
Great idea!
July Question of the month "What is your favorite thing about Carelot?"
Our June Winner was: Christopher's family from East Lyme- His MOM Laura submitted this fabulous recipe!
German Potato Salad
Ingredients
- 4 cups diced red potatoes
- ½ to 1 pound of bacon
- 1 small yellow or white onion
- 1/4 cup cider vinegar (may substitute white vinegar)
- 2 tablespoons water
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (or 2 teaspoons parsley flakes)
Instructions
- Peel and dice the potatoes into bite sized pieces.
- Place the potatoes into a pot and fill with enough water to cover.
- Bring to a boil and cook for about 10 minutes, or until easily pierced with a fork but firm enough to not fall apart. Drain, return to pot and set aside.
- Use a pair of kitchen scissors or a knife and cut the bacon crosswise into small pieces.
- Place the bacon pieces in a large deep skillet over a medium-high heat. Fry until browned and crisp, stirring to separate the pieces as they cook.
- Remove the bacon from the pan and set aside.
- Finely chop or julienne the onion and add the onion to the warm bacon grease in the skillet. (You may remove part of the bacon grease if needed, since only about 1/4 cup is necessary.) Cook over medium heat until browned.
- Add the vinegar, water, sugar, salt and pepper to the skillet and stir as you bring the mixture to a boil.
- Turn off the burner, crumble in half of the bacon and stir in the parsley to the dressing.
- Pour the dressing over the potatoes and stir well while heating over medium heat. Finally, transfer the salad to a serving dish and crumble the rest of the bacon over top
