App Review
Monster Math is a great way to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. The app introduces children to the adventures of Maxx, the mighty monster. In order to rescue his friend, Maxx has to explore new worlds and battle enemies using the power of mathematics.
The storyline, with its range of characters, acts as a useful motivator to encourage children to persevere with the computations and complete the challenges. The game itself takes its inspiration from Number Munchers, a blockbuster hit of the past.
Multiple Skills
Monster Math is designed to give children practice in a range of mathematical skills rather than just focusing on one area. In the app, questions about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division often appear alongside each other. This can be adjusted in settings, with teachers or parents having the option to target one particular area.
Even without this adult intervention the app is able to automatically adjust the difficulty level to meet the needs of individual children. If they are finding a set of questions easy to complete the app will progress them through the levels quickly whereas if a child is struggling, the rate of progress will be much slower. This adaptive logic helps to ensure that questions are pitched to challenge but not frustrate the user.
Four Modes of Play
In addition to the Story mode, Monster Math contains three other modes of play – Practice, Split Screen and Multiplayer. The Practice mode allows students to hone their skills without having to worry about time pressures or competition, making it a great place to start. As they gain in confidence they can challenge others in the Split Screen mode. This enables two children to compete against each other on the one device. The Multiplayer mode also allows two player competition but this takes place with friends online via Games Centre.
Clear and Insightful Reporting
Detailed information regarding student progress is provided in the Reports section. This is very clearly presented with a breakdown of what the student is able to do and what they are having difficulty with. This makes it easy for a teacher or parent to quickly see how a child is progressing. For those looking for more detail, a skill-by-skill analysis is also available.
Monster Math does not contain any adverts or in-app purchases. It is usually £2.29 / $2.99 but is available free on the app store for a limited time.
