Feel Empowered
In order to feel empowered and foster resilience, Aguillar states "You must feel that the ability to respond to challenges lies within you." We are educators. We are facing challenges ranging from lost library books to forgotten snow pants to the full moon to milk spills and teaching basic math facts in the midst of the holidays... and those are only the tip of the iceberg as the list does not include our personal challenges or the social- emotional battles our students face at home and school each day. How do you respond to the challenges? Are you resilient? YES!! Resilience is within each of us. Take a moment to reflect on the challenges we faced at the beginning of our school year and note the positive changes we've made since then. Now select an area you feel still needs improvement. Aguillar notes we can cultivate our own sense of power in that area in the following fashion:
- Identify an aspect of your professional (or personal) life that you want to improve.
- Sketch out an action plan and carry it forth.
- Reflect on what happens as you implement your plan.
- When you encounter a challenge, or when you stumble and fall, ask yourself Is it within my influence or control to do something about this challenge?
- When you struggle, tell yourself I'm having a hard time because I don't yet have the skills or knowledge I need in order to do this well.
- As you implement your plan and see the changes you are striving for, document them. Recognize your accomplishments.
- As yourself What went well today, and what was my role in making things go well? (Onward, 192-193.)
I believe YOU have the power and the resilience, and that WE can support one another to make positive changes. The impact of all that you do behind the scenes and in the wee small hours of the makes a difference every single day.
