New Machine Prep
Or, how I learned to love the refresh and back-up my stuff
Just a note on Refresh
Consider it like this, we are trying to create a guide to show you how to move from one house to another, without knowing what you have in your house. So these directions may be too broad, specific, or unnecessary. We cannot complete the move for you, we can only prepare you as best as we can.
You should also know, to help with this transition, we've been provided the best possible tools - Google Drive and Blackboard Learn which should hold the majority of your educational documents. The assumption is that you know how to use these tools as they are part of the M-Powerment Strategies and general day to day instruction.
Now for the actual disclaimer -- MGSD is not responsible for the transfer of your files, personal or otherwise, to your new machine. This guide is us reaching out 80% of the way, the other 20% is your responsibility.
Things Not to Do
Do Not Use Time Machine
This will make us wipe your machine and you'll have to start from scratch.
Do Not Expect Your Help Desk to Transfer Files
You are responsible for your own data. The Help Desk and Technology staff will not move or migrate your data for you.
If you are not prepared for the move, you will not have any files on your new laptop.
Do Not Use Migration Assistant
This is where you plug one machine directly into another machine and transfer data at once.
This will make us wipe your machine and you'll have to start from scratch.
Where / What to Back-Up To?
Flash Drive
The Cloud
Oh, and now you can share storage with your family
External Hard Drive
I have my storage solution... Now What?
Files
Most of the files you use for educational use will fall under one of these 3-D categories. Get it... 3D???
