CDS Middle School
Weekly Newsletter
October 5th, 2018
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
I hope all of you had a wonderful time with your families over the Chuseok holiday!
Students returned to CDS rested and ready to face the remaining weeks of Term 1. This week we enjoyed our first Dalton Cup competitions of the new school year. Throughout the week students brought in books for the upcoming Book Swap, and English classes took time to visit the Book Fair. We were also happy to see so many students supporting the charity Worldreader as a part of our We Run Cheongna Fund Drive.
As the weather is getting colder, we want everyone to stay healthy! Please encourage your children to get plenty sleep in the coming weeks and wash their hands often.
Next week students are looking forward to learning from author Bryn Barnard and participating in the many exciting BookCon events that we have planned this year---including our annual We Run Cheongna fun run on Friday.
Have a great weekend, and stay dry out there!
Best regards,
Benjamin Scoville
Director of Middle School
How to Speak with Your Child about MAP Growth Test Results / 자녀와 MAP test 결과에 대해 이야기하는 법
Earlier this week we sent your children home with their MAP Progress reports. I hope you've been able to take some time since then to speak with your child about their growth.
As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, conversation about grades and MAP scores will be most effective if the focus is centered on progress rather than achievement.
At CDS MS, we strive to create a culture where students value personal growth more than achieving the highest letter grade or RIT score. We know that for students to reach their potential, they need to have confidence and take risks with their learning.
If the focus on grades and achievement is too great, students are less likely to engage in challenging work because they're afraid they will fail. This applies to both high achieving and struggling learners.
It is my hope that we can work together as a school and parent community to share helpful messages with our students that encourage confidence and support growth.

Discussion on Hispanic Personalities
It is important to immerse students in the Hispanic culture so they can gain a
further understanding of the language. This allows students to learn more about the world, and the Hispanic customs. Engaging students in discussions in Spanish foster sharing ideas, inquiry, and the ability to summarize. These skills promote listening, speaking, and critical .thinking. Helping further develop the communicative competence of Spanish of students.
This Term students had to select a Hispanic personality, research and write a biography about them. Then, they had to design poster that would help them illustrate to their peers the information they gathered. Here is a video of the discussion and interaction students had while discussing the Hispanic personality they selected.

MS KAIAC Athletic Bus Request Forms
Dear CDS Parents,
To ensure good communication regarding transportation needs for KAIAC athletic events, we ask that you complete a bus request form each week by Wednesday at 11:59 PM indicating whether or not your child will ride the bus to or from any jamborees taking place in the upcoming weekend.
* If you request a seat on the bus the 15,000 won fee will be billed for that day at the end of the season, so please be sure before completing the form. Exceptions may be made if a student misses a game due to illness (or another emergency) and the student informs their coach in advance.
Thank you for your cooperation.
