Looking to next school year- we are going to be doing something new with our schedule. Students will have choices of which electives they would prefer. By the end of the month, we will send home more information for you to review with your son/daughter.

Literally Salon in 5J as Part of Reader's Workshop ~
Upon finishing up a unit in fiction focused on analyzing themes, Mrs. Johnston’s fifth grade readers enjoyed a celebration called a literary salon.
You might ask what a literary salon is? So did the fifth graders! We all learned together that a literary salon is a party where writers and intellectuals discuss books and other literary topics. And, you might be surprised, like the fifth graders were, to learn that this is not just something kids do in reader’s workshop, but that it originated in the 17th century and still continues today. We celebrated by having hot cocoa and talked about the many techniques and goals writers have like flashback or flashforward, building a mood or suspense, showing a resolution, metaphors, symbolism, tone or multiple points of view to name a few. The cool part was the kids used books they were reading that they had chosen, books they had read in book clubs or the book we read as a class, “Home of the Brave" by Katherine Applegate. It was truly inspiring and rewarding to hear kids discussing these elements with others in multiple level reading ability groups and not only learning from each other, but teaching each other! Way to go 5J readers! Your hard work is truly appreciated and shows:)
