History of tsunamis

Some people used to call them title waves. The word tsunami is really made out of two words tsu meaning harbor nami meaning wave so a tsunami is a harbor wave. There are different reasons tsunamis happen like under water earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and land slides but the most common is when a oceanic plate hits a continentle plate.

How tsunamis form

A tsunami happens when a oceanic plate hits a continentle plate and the oceanic plate slides under the other plate and th ocean floor either goes down or up and gravity acts fast to even out the waters surface but there are still waves under the surface going up to 970 miles per hour. when a tsunami reaches the shore it has no more space to move so the water builds up and destroys buildings and houses up to 50 miles away
