This Week
How did this week already fly by?! We had a really fun week filled with research, creativity, experiments, and lots of reading! Please take a look at this week's information and what we'll be studying next week.

Reader's Workshop
Topics:
Writing: Drafting our personal narrative stories, continuing with cursive.
Reading: Lucy Calkins reading program unit on "Interpreting Characters". We are also in the process of learning Reader's Workshop procedures, and I am completing F&P assessments. Please encourage your child to work for at least 30 minutes on www.learnzillion.com on the lessons they are assigned from Google Classroom.
Math: We are differentiating in math using our Math Workshop model. This will vary slightly from week to week, but will always include leveled opportunities for the students to grow in math! Please encourage your child to work for at least 30 minutes per week on www.khanacademy.org/maptest.
Science: We researched and created a scientific argument explaining the internal/external structures of a plant and an animal.
Enrichment: Students finished their research on their individual topics and created their presentations. Presentations will be due October 2.
Character Trait of the Week: Perseverance & Grit
- Keep trying, even when it seems impossible.
- Don't give up!
- Every time you fail, you find another way that doesn't work.
Important Information
- Please check your child's agenda nightly by initialing under "Parent Signature". I will also initial it in the morning to confirm they have written the correct information down.
- Friday Folders: They were sent home today! Please take out all the sheets and return the folder MONDAY.
- GT students will participate in the 3rd grade Holiday Concert on December 12th from 7-9pm.
- Bagel Sales! Pre-Order on Wednesdays of each week. All varieties cost $1, cash only. Bagels are delivered on Fridays.
- Sign-Up Genius Volunteer Sign-Up Link You must make sure your volunteer form and copy of driver's license is submitted to the front office as soon as possible before volunteering. There will be other volunteer opportunities for those wishing to volunteer for things like field trips, special events, etc.

Fun Run!!!
Start collecting pledges! A pledge sheet (PINK packet) was sent home last week. Use that to keep track of contributions. All students will participate in the Fun Run regardless of if they get pledges or not. The Fun Run is scheduled for Friday, October 6th!!!! Wear tennis shoes!

Looking Forward to Next Week
- Math: Finishing up unit 1 in both purple and blue groups. Students will have a unit test at the end of next week.
- Reading: We're getting the hang of reader's workshop! Continuing our focus on fictional characters.
- Writing: We will publish our first personal narratives using our checklist.
- Science: We will learn about how we perceive light and the characteristics of light through hands-on investigations.
- Enrichment: Students will present their first "Passion/Enrichment Project" on Monday. We will start our website portfolios later in the week.

Avondale School District 2017 Bond Proposal
- Requires NO increase in mils currently paid.
- Pays for safety, security, and technology upgrades.
