From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
I hope everyone has enjoyed their break! It is always great to get the chance to step back from our day-to-day and take some time to relax and recharge.
Please join me in congratulating the following students for being selected for All-State and All-County Honor Bands this school year! These students go over and above to prepare specific materials outside of our Band classes for months leading up to their audition performance. This coming Saturday, December 2, the "Sound of the Wildcats" will perform in 2 parades in the Winter Park/Orlando area. Saturday morning, the band performs in the "Ye Olde Hometown" Christmas Parade. The Parade begins at 9:00 AM on Park Ave., and the band is right near the beginning of the parade this year. In the evening, the band performs in the Baldwin Park "Winter Wonderland Extravaganza" Parade. The parade begins at 7:00 PM on New Broad St, and we are usually toward the end of this parade. Parents: you should be hearing lots of work at home this week on both our parade tune "Santa's Parade" and our upcoming Winter Concert program!
Students should be finalizing their selections for Solo & Ensemble this week. All registrations for our mid-year project are due December 5. Much more detailed info below.
The tradition continues with the Winter Park Band, the "Band-mas" tree will be up in the Band room starting this week and ready to celebrate the season. Students are encouraged, if they choose, to bring in an ornament on Monday to decorate the tree for the coming 3 weeks. Please remember to put your name on your ornament so you can retrieve it before we leave for Winter Break.
Let's make it a great week, and we'll see everyone after break!
Mr. Clemente
From the Band Booster President, Mrs. Dana Adkinson

Dear Band Families,
Door 2 Door - our biggest and most important fundraiser of the year is coming Saturday February 3, and the day will arrive faster than we’d all like to think! It takes a lot of planning, so that's why you're getting this email today.
Want to know why it's important?
$26,000.
That's how much we can raise in just ONE day to help pay for clinicians, transportation, new music, entry fees for county and state events, meals, equipment, new instruments and so much more enrichment that shapes your musician's skill and character.
More than any other fundraiser we do all year, Door to Door yields the most revenue in the shortest time. The more drivers we have, the more maps we can cover. The more maps we can cover, the more money the band raises. OR we can do a dozen car washes over a dozen weekends and have a more basic band program. I think you get the idea!
To make this fundraiser possible, we need parent drivers!
How does it work?
Each parent is given a carefully crafted map to drive, based on previous year’s fundraising results. We try to keep you close to your home, if possible. Each driver takes 4 kiddos in their uniforms to walk the part of the neighborhood on your map and collect money door-to-door. The students split up into groups of two and each group takes a side of the street. You are able to stay in your car and move along with them or get out and walk. You and your group return for lunch and you will get a new group with a new map for the afternoon.
This is a tradition for the Sound of the Wildcats and many neighbors expect our arrival, as we do it the same Saturday every year. We also have special permission from the City of Winter Park, so our kids are safe.
For all students, the fundraiser puts money directly into their band accounts! For any parent that signs up to drive, your child will receive an additional portion of the proceeds that will go directly into their account.
What you need to do:
For every driver that signs up I need 3 things:
- Copy of driver's license
- Copy of insurance card that will be valid at time of D2D, February 3. If it’s renewing between now and February, wait to send me the updated info, but send me an email letting me know that.
- A screenshot of your active/approved/passed Additions status.
It may seem like there’s plenty of time, but I need to have this information collected now and complete by Winter Break. Since we will all be so busy with the holidays, it’s helpful if you can sign up now and send me the info as soon as possible. Heather Ribaric, our map organizer extraordinaire, will begin doing her magic with all those maps by the first week of January.
The links for Additions and Sign-up Genius are below:
Here is the link for NEW Additions approval and TO RENEW (required each school year), click on this link and sign in, then follow the prompts:

Here is the Sign-Up Genius Link:

If you're signed up on Additions, but not finding that Additions page you need for your screenshot, here is the link sign in and instructions to find your status:
https://ocps.samaritan.com/custom/503/volunteer_home
- sign in (yep- you've got to remember that login info!)
- If you do this on your computer, your picture and active status will pop right up. Take a picture and send that to me.
- If you do this on your phone: once you sign in, it will say, "Welcome (your name)", scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says "more" and click on that. The next screen should show your picture and say "active, approved, passed, etc.". That's the page I need a screenshot of.
And I also need the driver's license and insurance card showing a date that's valid at the time of D2D February3.
Remember, please only sign up if you are able to drive, however, we certainly understand sometimes there are unforeseen circumstances. We will be driving four kids for each car.
Please note that the sign ups are from 8-5.The sign ups are created like that because accommodating 1/2 day is very challenging to schedule. If you are unable to do all day, but can do 1/2 day, please let us know. We will put you on hold and see what our need is closer to February.
Warm regards,
Robyn Fodor
SOLO & ENSEMBLE
As we continue into the 2nd marking period of the school year, it's time to begin finalizing selections for the annual Solo and Ensemble MPA. As a reminder from our Band Handbook, Solo and Ensemble is a part of our 2nd - 3rd quarter project for all students in the Winter Park Band. This project allows our students to have a performance opportunity where they are able to showcase their individual musicianship and take what they are learning in their Band classes and apply it toward a piece of music of their own choosing. It is our firm belief that preparing a piece for performance either individually or in a small group is one of the most effective ways for our students to improve their musicianship. Students' work performing solos and multiple events for Solo & Ensemble MPA is also taken into consideration with ensemble auditions for the upcoming school year. As the saying goes, a rising tide raises all boats, and when all students work to improve their individual musicianship, the Band program benefits as a whole.
Band students have two performance options to complete the Solo and Ensemble project:
- Option 1(preferred): Solo and Ensemble MPA. Solo and Ensemble MPA takes place each year at the beginning of February and is hosted by a school in our district, this year University HS on February 9 and 10. This event is put on by the Florida Bandmasters Association(FBA), and allows students to perform for an adjudicator for a rating. Adjudicators for this event are professors, teachers, and performers from across the state of Florida, and students have the opportunity to receive feedback on their performance from someone who is an expert on their instrument. Students perform either a solo or chamber ensemble piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and may perform in up to 4 different events. Entrance fees are paid for by the Band program as a part of Fair Share.
- Option 2: Solo and Ensemble Recital Option. For students who choose not to perform at the Solo and Ensemble MPA put on by FBA, those students will perform as part of our Solo and Ensemble Recital at school. This year, that recital will take place in the Band Room on Wednesday, January 31, beginning at 1:30 PM. Students must select a piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and the performances will be adjudicated by both Mr. Smith and Mr. Clemente.
WHAT'S NEXT:
The next step is choosing which option you prefer and what piece(s) you will perform. Start looking at solo literature, consult your private lesson teacher, and/or get your chamber ensemble together and committed to performing as a group. Once you are prepared to register for either Solo and Ensemble MPA or the Solo and Ensemble Recital Option, follow the links below. If a student chooses to play a solo, they are responsible for providing a piano accompanist or pre-recorded accompaniment. If you are in search of an accompanist, please consult this list of piano accompanists on the Band website.
