LOOK AT US!!!!! MEETING THOSE MID-YEAR GOALS FOR IREADY GROWTH IN MATH AND READING!
FROM THE DESK OF TERRI MILLER.......
Way to go PT!! We met our building goals in iReady of 50% on or above grade level in Reading and 40% on or above grade level in Math!! Your hard work and dedication has been noticed and much appreciated! Your students enjoyed wearing pajamas and eating pancakes. Thank you to everyone that pitched in and helped out. It was a team effort and a huge success!
After the iReady Diagnostic test:
Celebrate individual, class and building success
Track new score on student data page
All students need to have a form for tracking their progress on iReady. If you have a great form that you wouldn’t mind sharing, please send it to me and I will make a folder for everyone to access.

Phonics vs. Word Study
Phonics is learning the alphabetic code...the relationship between sounds and letters...in order to decode words. Word study is broader than that. It is about teaching children to study words in order to learn how they work. In addition to phonics, it includes phonemic awareness, high frequency word recognition, and understanding spelling patterns, word structures, vocabulary, and morphology. Phonics instruction teaches beginning readers the alphabetic code so they can decode words. Word study goes beyond the rote memorization of letters and sounds. It teaches readers how to apply their knowledge of letters, sounds, and words in order to read and spell.
It is important for students to receive daily instruction in phonics and word study. Make sure that you are addressing both of these skills through daily WTW and small Guided Reading groups. Richardson, J., & Dufresne Michèle. (2019). The next step forward in word study and phonics. New York, NY: Scholastic.
Some Word Study Activities:
Teach a New Sight Word
What’s Missing
Mix & Fix
Table Writing
Write & Retrieve
Picture Sorting
Pass out 3-4 picture cards to each student
On the easel write the two sounds that you want students to listen for.
Have each student sort a picture by…
Saying the picture name
Saying the target sound
Saying the letter (or letters) that make that sound
Putting the picture card under the correct letter or letters
Making Words
Create your own series of words that teach the target skill.
Tell students the letters they will need and have them remove those letters from their tray.
Dictate a word for the students to make and tell them how many letters they will need.
After students make the word with the magnetic letters, tell them to check the word by saying it slowly as they run their finger underneath it.
Dictate a new word that differs by one letter (or letter clusters if you are targeting blends.).
Before students reach for the letters to exchange, teach them to say the new word slowly as they slide their finger under the current word.
Sounds Boxes
Dictate a word for students to write in the boxes. Tell them how many boxes to use. Don’t waste time asking students to figure out the number of boxes they will use.
Have students say the word slowly and run their finger under the boxes.
Have students say the word again slowly and write the letter or letters for each phoneme in one box. When students write a word with a digraph (ch, sh, th), both letters go in the same box because they are one phoneme. When they write words with a blend, each letter is written in a separate box because blends contain two or more phonemes.
Pineapple Calendar~This quarter we will try something new...during one TWW we will go visit a colleagues classroom for 15 minutes and then come back together to debrief. We will look at classroom organization, student engagement, classroom management, etc. Depending on the time of day will determine what subject area we will observe. The goal is to get some ideas to take back to your classroom and to see how students are being engaged in other classrooms. The pineapple magnet will still be moved from classroom to classroom each week for other observations if desired.
TWW~Agendas are linked. See the agenda for items to bring and discussions to prepare for.
Come see me if you have any questions or concerns. Let me know how I can further support you and your students in your classroom.
