INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES
Sources of Strength Spirit Days!
Next week is Sources of Strength Spirit week! Sources of Strength is a strength-based, comprehensive wellness program. The program is based on a relational connections model of Peer Leaders to promote and focus on connectivity, school bonding, peer-adult partnerships, and help seeking behaviors. Next week we will be focusing on areas of the wheel. Below is the Sources of Strength national logo with each of the 8 strengths:
Spirit Days:
Monday: Mental Health March Madness: Wear your favorite college gear OR wear red
Tuesday: Positive friends: Twin day OR wear yellow
Wednesday: Physical Health: wear your favorite jazzercise/workout gear OR wear teal
Thursday: Mentors: Dress like your favorite teacher OR wear green
Friday: SOS wheel day: 6th wear orange, 7th wear blue, 8th wear purple and STAFF wear grey
SOS will be selling donuts on Wednesday, 4/5 at 7:20 in the MPR for $1. It will be first come, first served.
Community Service Day
Our building-wide community service day is Wednesday, April 19 and we could not be more excited! A huge shout out to our Site Council parents who have helped to plan this amazing experience for our students and staff! We will have 46 groups serving in Olathe, Overland Park, Lenexa, Spring Hill, Paola, Leavenworth, Mission, Bonner Springs and Kansas City. What an impact we are going to have!
The Why
When Prairie Trail opened in the Fall of 2004, it was founded on strong values of giving back to our community. Over the years, we have integrated many service opportunities for students and we are excited to now offer a building-wide day for all students to participate in. This year our WAG lessons have focused on kindness, gratitude and community service among other topics.
Schedule of the Day
• 7:50 Students will report to the teacher who they are going with for their service project
• 8:30 Busses will depart
• 11:30 Lunch will begin busses will return to PRT at various times so lunch times will vary
• 1:25 Guest speaker for the whole school
• 2:35 Clubs
Permission Slips
Students will rank their preferences for which location to attend and/or sign up for the location they prefer during WAG time on Monday, April 3. If students are absent, they will sign up on Tuesday. Students will receive their permission slip on Wednesday, April 5. Please return it the next day, if possible or no later than Monday, April 10.
What students need to bring
The permission slip will list what students need to bring for their service location and/or what types of clothing need to be worn.
Students should not bring any schoolwork that day. They only need to bring a water bottle and a beach towel (for the picnic lunch).
Parent Volunteers
We are in need of many parent volunteers to make this day possible. On the permission slip, you may include your email address at the bottom if you are interested in chaperoning the service trip that your student is attending. Please note, some groups may not be able to accommodate all parents who are interested in chaperoning. Teachers will notify you by April 11th if you are selected to attend.
We are also in need of parents to help grill hotdogs for lunch, help serve/refill the lunch line and to help supervise classes of students as they eat their lunch. You may sign up for one of these roles in the SignUp Genius link below.
Directions for the Morning of April 19
When the bell rings at 7:40am, students will report directly to the teacher who they are going with on the community service project. Students will leave their beach towel in that classroom and take their water bottle. Again, those are the only items they will need. If you would like to apply sunscreen or bug spray at home, please do so. Many of our locations are outside. Teachers will review expectations and the plans for the day prior to departure at 8:30am.
Student Expectations
Students will be reminded that all school rules and expectations are expected for this field trip. This means that students should not have their phone out during the community service trip. Students should dress school appropriate and be sure to dress for the weather. Students are encouraged to wear PRT gear! It is crucial that our students represent our school in a positive light, use their manners, are polite and respectful and show the highest levels of our core characteristics – Pride, Respect and Teamwork. Please review these expectations at home as well.
Lunch
Students will be eating lunch when their bus returns to school. Busses will have a staggered return between 11:45-12:50. Lunch will include hotdogs, chips, a cookie and lemonade. Below is the SignUp Genius link for food donations and parent volunteers. If your child prefers to bring their lunch, that is fine. If your child has any food allergies, we will work with the nurse to determine an alternate lunch option. We will be serving 900 people this day so thank you in advance for your generous donations.
Many students, especially 6th grade, will be eating much later than their normal lunch time. It is crucial that all students eat a big breakfast and protein is recommended!
Donations
In order to make this day happen, we are in need of many donations. The SignUp Genius link requests hotdogs, buns, chips, condiments, cookies, plates, napkins and parent volunteers. Again, thank you in advance for helping to make this day possible! We will need all donations dropped off in the office by 3:30pm on Monday, April 17.

Rain out plan
Unfortunately, it will not be possible to reschedule 46 locations for a different date. A decision will be made similarly to a snow day with a message out to families before 6am if the weather does not cooperate. If it is a rain out, we will have classes and students should bring their schoolwork to school that day after all. We will still have our guest speaker and clubs in the afternoon.
Guest Speaker
We are also very excited to host Cam F. Awesome as our guest speaker. He is a motivational speaker who travels nation-wide presenting at schools and other venues and he is a former Olympic boxer. He has spoken at many Olathe schools over the years. His message is focused on resilience, gratitude, hard work and uplifting one another. Below is a link to a video introduction.

Again, we are so excited for this opportunity for our students! It is going to be an awesome day for all involved! Please be on the lookout for the permission slip to come home next Wednesday and return it the next day, if possible!
