Scoliosis Screening for 5th graders
5th grade students will be offered screening for Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) on November 20th. The purpose of the screening is to recognize any deviation from normal so the need for treatment can be determined.
The screener will observe your child’s posture while standing and bending forward.
If scoliosis is suspected, you will be notified to receive further evaluation from your private physician.
If you would like your student screened, you must OPT IN by completing the permission form and returning it to school with your student.
Forms will be sent home with your student soon and are also found on the YES website > For Parents > School Nurse > Scoliosis Opt In Form
Art Action with Mr. Daniel
We're heading into November working on some cool projects in the YES Art Dept!
Our Fourth and Fifth Grade classes are finishing their "We Honor Our Veterans" project for Veterans Day. We also completed paintings based on the works of Claude Monet. We're using our creative ability, elements of art, and principles of design to develop compositions that express our appreciation for our veterans. We're exploring how Betsy Ross and others created our nation's flag. We're also exploring how the American Flag is a work of art that helped define our country.
We're using symbolism to illustrate the affection that we, as well as our veterans, have toward our country. For example:
A. The Heart is a symbol for the love that we have for our country. It is also a symbol of the courage it took for our veterans to protect the liberty and freedom that we enjoy daily.
B. The Tree is a symbol of strength and protection. Our veterans moved in strength to protect our nation.
C. The Hand is a symbol of extending help to others. Our veterans are always ready to lend a helping hand.
D. The Guitar is a symbol of the sweet sounds of progress that our nation is making. Lee Greenwood's patriotic song, "God Bless the U.S.A.," provides the perfect soundtrack for our veterans' affection towards our nation.
E. The Hot Air Balloon symbolizes our veterans' ability to rise to meet every challenge.

Music Messages from Mrs. Oprandy
All students learned to sing “Sally Go ‘Round the Sun” as a 2-part or 3-part round while walking in multiple circles to the steady beat. Students also increased their knowledge of instruments of the orchestra by playing a matching game.
Fourth graders learned to sing a new song, “It Starts with Me," for our December music program. They also learned the circle singing game, “Bow Wow Wow." This month, fourth grade students learned how to hold and strum the ukulele. They learned to play chords C7 and F and to sing the songs “Rain, Rain Go Away," “Bow Wow Wow” and “It’s Raining, It’s Pouring” while playing the ukulele.
Fifth graders learned to sing a new song, “Where No One Has Gone Before," for our December music program. They also learned the circle singing game “Chicken on a Fence Post” which gave them the opportunity to learn a new rhythm, sixteenth notes. Fifth grade students reviewed information about the staff and line and space notes while playing the recorder. The game B-A-G Roll and Play helped students practice reading recorder music without the notes labeled.
Venture Visit with Mrs. Price
October has been a fun month in Venture! We began the month playing Mancala and Blokus which promote higher order thinking and spatial awareness. Then we learned about Newton’s first law of motion as we built cars using K’Nex. The students became engineers and designed cars with seatbelts and safety seats to ensure their passengers' (stuffed animals) safety. The crash tests were especially fun! To end the month, we welcomed fall by building pumpkin stands out of straws and tape. Their creations never cease to amaze me!
Please remember that your classroom spelling bee will be held the week of November 4th. Lists were sent home several weeks ago. You may also find study lists on my website, https://www.auburnschools.org/Page/4688. Classroom winners will receive additional lists to study.
The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
During the month of October, Guidance lessons focused on Erin’s Law. Students learned about their Bill of Rights: Safety, Voice, Respect, and Identity. Students have a responsibility to stand up for their rights. We also reviewed the importance of internet safety. Parents should know what their students are doing on line and also with whom. Cyberbullying is real and happens every day. Students are to immediately report any signs of this to their parent and are not to participate in it. It is also important to remember that it is against the law and therefore could include police involvement. We also discussed personal space and reporting if anyone invades your space and makes you feel uncomfortable. Please take a few minutes to discuss these safety matters with your student.
In November we fill focus on Healthy Choices. Students will learn more about positive and negative peer pressure, as well as making wise and healthy choices. The choices our students make today will affect their futures. Encourage your students to be their best every day.
Quote of the month:
Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later.
