Where?
KLO Middle School, Gordon Drive, Kelowna, BC, Canada
1st Stop-Knox Mountain
To get to beautiful Knox Mountain we took a school bus. Our ride was about 12 minutes from our school (KLO).Three landmarks that we saw from Knox mountain was, the bridge, hospital, and Okanagan lake. Knox was created by these four processes; erosion, glaciation, volcanic activity, and plate movement. The fault line runs down the middle of Okanagan lake, the fault line is where the north and south plates meets. The level of the lake used to be as high as the top of Knox Mountain.
2nd Stop-Gorman's Mill
We took a school bus to get to Gorman's mill, which is across the bridge. The kind of rock we found at Gorman's mill was coal and fossil rocks. Inside some of the rocks there were fossils of plants. The thin black layers in the rocks is coal. The volcanic eruptions spread igneous rock and melted with sedimentary rocks. On this mill there are layers of miniature sandstone. Some of the layers indicate that there were lots of plants, animals, and it was hot ,wet and humid.
3rd Stop-Mt. Boucherie
We took a school bus to Mt. Boucherie, we are on the west side and about 5 kilometres away from Gorman's mill. Mt. Bouchreie stared forming about 50 million years ago, with several periods of activity and inactivity. If you pick up a rock and it has bubbles in it then it is an extrusive rock. Mt. Boucherie is a lot smaller now then it was 50 million years ago, because of erotions and rain/snow.
Lunch Stop-Mission Creek Park
We got here by school bus this stop is part of the tour.We ate lunch at Mission creek park. As you can see there is a really fun playground. Mission creek park is a really fun place to go to, they have lots of hiking trails that are suitable for all ages.
4th Stop-Layer Cake Mountain
We took a school bus to Layer Cake Mountain, Layer cake mountain is located in south east Kelowna. The layers in the mountain are slightly slanted to one side because of plate movement.
5th Stop-The Quarry
We took a school bus to get to the Quarry. The Quarry is also located in south east Kelowna, not far from Layer cake Mountain. The rock we found was called metamorphic, you can tell if it is metamorphic or not, because metamorphic rocks have layers in it. Metamorphic rocks are formed from pressure and heat.
