A Message from the Superintendent
It was a privilege to host the Honorable Mark Takano, United States Congressman for the 41st District of California, at his alma mater this past Thursday to talk politics with U.S. Government students. The 41st District of California encompasses Riverside, Moreno Valley, Jurupa Valley and Perris in the United States House of Representatives. Congressman Takano graduated from La Sierra High School in 1979 as the school's valedictorian. He then attended Harvard College in route to a career as an educator and then as an elected official. He serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and as a member of the Education and Labor Committee.
Congressman Takano talked to our students about his humble roots growing up in Riverside, his journey to Washington D.C., his commitment to education, and what he does as a U.S. Congressman. He also answered our students' questions, which ranged from how the political process unfolds to his experience at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Your Child's Digital Footprint
The importance of treating others with respect and kindness is a message we consistently send to our students through our words and actions. That message extends to social media, where we are experiencing an increase in bullying and hurtful behaviors, including spreading rumors, as well as oversharing and exposing themselves to the dark web.
Our schools are constantly reminding students about the negative effects of participating in inappropriate social media behavior. Please reinforce this important message at home. Students are becoming more savvy about social media use and often create fake accounts to deceive others or eavesdrop. Your children's digital footprints will impact their future. Your children's online behavior shapes how people view them, which could be a good thing if they are a positive influencer.
These behaviors are not confined to teenagers. Some of our elementary-age students are actively engaged in digital misbehavior. A digital footprint can have a lasting impact on a person's reputation, relationships, and college or future employment opportunities. Help your children think critically about their digital footprints on social media, including individual and group texting.
Learn more about digital footprints in the Common Sense Media video below.
Join the Mission to Help Keep Kids Drug-Free
Red Ribbon Week is celebrated annually October 23-31. It's s the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness program. The theme for National Red Ribbon Week this year is Celebrate Life. Live Drug Free. The theme is a reminder that everyday Americans across the country make significant daily contributions to their communities by being the best they can be because they live Drug-Free. Red Ribbon Week activities begin Monday and continue throughout the week. Raising awareness about the dangers of drugs is not an event for schools, it's part of our daily work as we partner with multiple agencies in our community to keep our children safe and our families informed. Join the mission to help keep kids drug-free.
Riverside Arts Academy Host Our Students at the Fox
During the day on Friday, many of our elementary school students attended a performance at the historic Fox Theater presented by the Riverside Arts Academy (RAA) and featuring students and guest artists. In the evening, RAA held their annual gala to raise funds to support their mission to provide an inspirational and creative arts education to the children and youth of Riverside. RAA provides over 50 hours of instruction weekly in art classes including strings, band, mariachi, orchestra, percussion, and more; to serve 2,000 students annually, many from Alvord.
The flagship ensembles: the Riverside Youth Orchestra, the Riverside Honor Band, the Riverside Children’s Choir, and the Mariachi Juvenil de Riverside perform at high-profile events and performances across the region. We are partners with RAA and work closely with them to bring their program into our schools. Riverside Arts Academy is made possible by sponsorships and donations from businesses and individuals. Learn how you can support RAA here.
The first of our campus security video surveillance projects at our elementary schools is wrapping up this week at McAuliffe. Video surveillance systems are among the security and facility upgrades we are making at all 23 of our schools. Our security enhancement projects include 8-foot anti climb perimeter fencing on all of our campuses as well. Public works projects take time because they require an approval process that starts with the local Board of Education and ends in Sacramento.

In addition to our security enhancement projects, we are planning modernization projects at all our schools. Click here or on the image below to visit the web site for the planned project list related to Measure J, our facilities bond on the November 8, 2022 ballot.
In Closing....
On behalf of the Board of Education, thank you in advance for talking to your children to reinforce our messages about digital citizenship, kindness and respect, and being drug-free. Together we can keep our students safe and thriving.
Thank you for reading my message. Please pass it on.
