Superintendent Briefings
August 21, 2017
Dear Parents and La Vernia Community,
The first day of school is around the corner (this Wednesday, August 23, 2017) and our teachers, staff, and administrators are ready to welcome back our students with open arms and a heartfelt desire to Educate, Engage, and Empower their minds. As we enter the 2017-2018 school year, I would like to share some of the new and exciting programs that were recently approved by our Board of Trustees.
All LVISD buses have been outfitted with new onboard cameras and will soon be upgraded with a digital two-way radio system. This radio system will provide greater coverage and clarity for the safe transport of our students. Our trustees also approved two additional Chromebook carts for each campus! That’s 60 more Chromebooks per school as we continue to integrate the use of the Google Classroom applications. In addition, each Junior High classroom will now be equipped with an electronic interactive whiteboard and projector that will engage our students in 21st century learning experiences.
If you have not done so already, please visit our new La Vernia ISD website. We hope that you find it to be more user friendly and informative. As you prepare for the first day of school, I welcome you to find a picture of your child’s teacher, this year’s school supply lists, and transportation route information. We will continue to add new features and tabs throughout the school year.
We have so much to celebrate in our school district. Our academics are on the rise with AP, SAT, and ACT participation and performance scores increasing. Our University Interscholastic League (UIL) Lone Star Cup 4A standing improved from 45th place in 2016 to 13th place in 2017! That means that we are competing at a prominent level in academics, the fine arts, and athletics. Our college readiness metrics on STAAR met and exceeded the standard in 19 out of 23 indicators! As a system, we are ensuring that our students are college and career ready. We are so proud of our dedicated educators and their commitment to “know every student by name and need.”
Our theme this year is “We Are La Vernia.” We had an amazing Convocation centered on this theme to kick off the school year with our staff. During this event, a number of our students helped to celebrate our identity through their diverse abilities and talents. It was so exciting to see them take part in such an important beginning of the year ceremony in our school district.
Our staff will be partaking in a book study this year. The title of the book is The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon. The book focuses on 10 Rules to Fuel Your Life, Work, and Team with Positive Energy. I encourage you to “get on the bus” and take this journey with us. The story will reveal 10 secrets for approaching life and work with the positive forward thinking energy that leads to true accomplishment - at work and at home. We understand that everyone faces challenges in life and every person, organization, and team will have to overcome adversity to define themselves and create their own success. No one goes through life untested and the answer to these tests is positive energy centered on an aligned vision and purpose. Check out their website www.theenergybus.com/ for more information. It will truly transform your life.
The Board of Trustees and I would like to thank you for your belief in La Vernia ISD and the solid foundation that together we will lay for your children; our students. Let's show that La Vernia Bear Pride!
Go Bears!
Sincerely,
José H. Moreno, Ed.D.
