The Principal's Jam
JMS Students and Parents,
We have a few motivational sayings at Jolliff that we use every day to build school pride and culture. P.R.E.S.S. is our schoolwide expression of the behaviors we expect and want students to building into their character before moving on to high school (Pride, Respect, Effort, Safety, and Social Responsibility). One saying that I have started using and hope catches on is "Jaguars ImPRESS by doing their best." What I love about this is that it expresses my everyday expectation. Perfection is NOT the expectation- not of our students and not of our teachers. We are all going to make mistakes, make bad decisions, and sometimes fail (even teachers have a bad lesson every once in a while). What we expect is for all Jaguars to be prepared for the challenges of the day, respond appropriately, learn, grow, and do/be better the next time. THAT is the definition of doing your best.
As we head into the second month of school, check in with your student about their academic progress. Are they thriving? Are they ready for the next challenge? Are they connecting with peers and finding adults to lean on for help? If not, reach out to your child's teachers, school counselors, or grade level adminstrator. This is the right time of year to evaluate together what is going well and what is needed.
In the words of Vince Lombardi, "Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence." Let's continue to PRESS for perfection and catch excellence in all that we do, Jaguars.
Happy October!

Counselor Connections:
BULLYING PREVENTION MONTH
The month of October raises awareness of many notable causes and this month we will continue our efforts to eliminate bullying and promote a school community that is accepting and inclusive of every student! School counselors will spend time engaging students in classroom discussion on the 3 Rās of Bullying: Recognize it, Refuse it, and Report it; and we will also remind students of the definition below. We will celebrate UNITY Day on October 18th by wearing ORANGE to promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion!
JMS Celebrates Red Ribbon Week - October 23rd through 31st!
Red Ribbon Week is celebrated across our nation in honor of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent who lost his life in the fight against drugs in Mexico in 1985. In honor of Kiki's memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began to wear red badges of satin. Parents then began to form coalitions using Camarena as their model while embracing his belief that one person can make a difference. These coalitions adopted the symbol of Camarena's memory, the Red Ribbon. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Our student leaders are working with the School Counseling Department to plan Red Ribbon Week activities to promote the decision to live a drug-free life!
