Poem In Your Pocket Day
From Your District Library Media Specialists
What it's all about...
April is National Poetry Month, and we are planning a community event between Emerson students and local businesses. The event will take place over two days, Friday, April 21st and Saturday, April 22nd, and will involve students visiting participating stores to recite original or found poetry.
We are hopeful you will encourage students to participate in this community wide event.
We greatly appreciation your support,
Ruth Kelly, Memorial and Villano Library Media Centers
Lisa Thomas, Emerson Jr/Sr High School Library Media Center
Goals for the Community Poetry Event
Build literacy skills and confidence in public speaking
- Students select a poem to read aloud or write one of their own.
- Students practice writing and reciting poetry in school.
- At each business, students may read the poem from a paper or recite from memory.
Strengthen our school and community bond
- Families from all schools throughout our community participate.
- Stores receive increased business due to the high volume of participation.
- The public sees students in a different and positive light.
Recruiting Our Poetry Partners
Along with our parent organizations, we are approaching local “family friendly” businesses to share our goals with the proprietors.
We are asking if they would provide a small treat or token to students who visit and recite a poem.
Promotional materials are being made available to participating businesses.
Additional Poetry Suggestions To Celebrate Poetry Month
Here are ideas to explore:
