A Note from Dr. Burdett
We had a great week at PHS! Orchestra put on a beautiful concert on Thursday night and our Hope Squad continued to spread words of encouragement through sidewalk art (see photos below) and holding the doors for students as they entered the building. We started our adjusted Eagle Time and we have heard from many students and teachers that this is benefitting our kids academically because we are more intentional with who comes to our tutorial sessions and the students who stay in place are able to have study hall in their classes. In addition, our students are better informed about the happenings at PHS because we are able to watch ENN during this time. Finally, and of utmost importance, we are safer by having significantly fewer students in the cafeteria during Eagle Time and this will allow us to take quicker action in the event of an emergency.
Volleyball continued to roll in District play by defeating McKinney HS on Tuesday night and then defeating Plano East on Friday night. Tennis continues in the playoffs by playing at Wylie on Tuesday. We wish Tennis the best! Football had a setback at Jesuit with a 41-14 loss but we look to rebound this week for our Homecoming game against McKinney Boyd.
Homecoming week is this week and we will have activities/dress up days each day. Please take note of each day as we have many activities. Wednesday is a big day for PSAT/SAT testing across the campus and those Juniors/Seniors not testing have late arrival. See details below.
I had the pleasure of doing an instructional walk with several teachers this week. We have 34 Job Embedded Teams (JETs) made up of teachers who have the same planning period. This allows us to have interdisciplinary teams who do instructional walks to see the great things going on in other teachers' classrooms. This year, our focus for our JET instructional walks is on the quality questioning book study we did this summer as a staff. These walks are an excellent way for us to grow as professionals because we are learning from the experts on our campus! We have a very deep pool of instructional mastery at PHS (and in PISD) and our kids will reap the benefits of this job-embedded professional learning. Our teams will do at least 6 JET instructional walks throughout the year for a minimum of 204 JET instructional walks across the campus. One of the added benefits of our JETs is that we build stronger relationships. This happens among the staff because we are typically working alongside someone who is from another part of the campus. This happens with our kids because we are seeing them in classes different from our own and this provides us another opportunity to brag on them! As a result, we add another layer of support for our staff and students and we strengthen the connectedness within our Eagle Nation family.
Please look at the calendar and see what you can attend. Our students would love to see you supporting them and noticing how our inputs are affecting our outcomes.
