Noetic Math Competition
Last semester, PEAK students in grades 3-5 had the chance to participate in a math competition called The Noetic Learning Math Contest. 23,000 students participated in this nationwide competition. The goal of the competition was to encourage students' interest in math, to develop their problem solving skills, and to inspire them to excel. During the contest, students were given 45 minutes to solve 20 problems. Of those students who chose to participate, we had several receive the following recognition and awards:
National Honor Roll Medal: The top 10% of all participants in each grade received 'National Honor Roll' medals.
Team Winner Medal: The highest scorer of each team received a 'Team Winner' medal.
Team Achievement Plaque: The top 10% of teams (excluding after-school institution teams and homeschool teams) received Team Achievement Plaques.
We are so proud of all of our competitors! You can find the fall winners officially listed on the Noetic website. The Alexander Doniphan Honor Role can be found here (this is the top 50% and 10% in the nation). Honor Roll. In addition, our 4th grade team (collectively) scored in the top 10%! Pictures are of our fourth grade team members.
As a reminder, this is a gifted math competition. The problems were designed to be very challenging. If you have a question about your child's score, please contact Mrs. Turner at kim.turner@lps53.org. The contest will be available again second semester for anyone who would like to improve a score or give it a try for the first time!

PEAK Curriculum
Theme:
Students are still deep into research! They are working on finding relevant and significant information to support their essential questions. Over the next few weeks, 4th and 5th graders will begin to organize and synthesize their notes to prepare for writing.
Math:
We are currently wrapping up the Logic Math session we began before the break. Students have really enjoyed putting their logical mathematical skills to the test! Keep an eye out for exciting new math choices coming soon!
Personal Growth and Development:
This month, students will join PGD groups based on the information you provided in the Gifted Social and Emotional Development survey you filled out at the beginning of the year. Our goal with these groups is to support the unique needs of our gifted learners in a more personalized way.
Independent Investigation:
Students are still working on applying research skills from theme to their Independent Investigation topics. Once they have enough information to become "experts" on their topics, they'll begin brainstorming projects to best showcase what they've learned.
Science:
This month, students will continue to test whether or not name brand products are worth the money compared to generic brands. Plastic wrap is our next experiment. We can't wait to report which brand is the smartest purchase!
