Leadership Message
“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him”. John 4:9
As we enter into Spring Break as a faith community, we become mindful of the sacrifice Jesus made for each of us and the eternal love of God that surrounds us unconditionally. It can be challenging to talk to young children about the Passion of Christ. We have a beautiful opportunity to help our children connect that the core of the Christian message of death and life is exemplified by Good Friday and Easter.
During Holy week we will remember, we will pray, we will weep, we will come together, and we will rejoice! This is because we are Easter people! There is hope and joy in knowing that after sacrifice and pain comes eternal glory with God, our Father. Sometimes it can be difficult for our children to understand the suffering of Jesus. There is hope in coming together as Christians to love in times of suffering and pain. What do we do when one of our own are hurting or in pain?We pray, we care, we support, we love, we remember God’s love for each of us. Reminding our children that there is a beautiful call for God’s people to respond in crisis and suffering. This is LOVE and FAITH in action! In their worlds, our students respond with LOVE and FAITH when they include others, pray for the needs of others, share their belongings, and love without conditions. May each of us remember to respond to suffering with love and remain steadfast in our joy of the hope that Easter brings!
Today, many of our classes went around the school and spent some time with the Stations of the Cross. One group of students were going around together as Grade fours and Kindergarten buddies and it was so beautiful to hear and see the tender explanations of the Passion of Jesus. The pictures capture the moment but the way the grade fours explained the station gave evidence to the commitment of our Catholic faith shared both from home and school. Here are a couple of moments for you to “hear”:
Grade 4 student: Do you know what a Saint is? They are someone who dedicated their life to God.
Grade 4 student: Do you see anything on that cloth? That is Jesus’ face. Veronica was caring for Jesus when she wiped his face.
We thank each of you for the continued blessing of walking with your children. We so valued the conversations at conferences and your continued support. Together, we can do so much!
May you and your family experience the joy and love of God this Easter and always.

Learning through Competencies
We are focusing on using the language and philosophies of learning through the competencies at Jean Vanier. Through competencies, students develop and connect key aspects of knowing, thinking and doing across a variety of learning contexts, both within and outside school. As students develop competencies through learner outcomes, they acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to their success as lifelong learners and active citizens.

Ukrainian Community Event
Here is some information regarding a Ukrainian community event happening this weekend that may be of interest. It is being run through the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton.
Greetings from Camp Encounter and Our Lady of Victory Camp!
The time has arrived for us to let the young people of our Archdiocese know to Come Camping with Christ and we need your help! Our Lady of Victory Camp and Camp Encounter offer exciting opportunities for young people to experience the love of Christ through week-long faith experiences. In addition, older students gain valuable leadership experience as they attend a leadership retreat and have the opportunity to be counsellors (small group leaders) during a camper week. Both camps are owned and operated by the Archdiocese of Edmonton and are accredited members of the Alberta Camping Association.
The Catholic schools within the Archdiocese are one of the best ways for us to make young people aware of our camps and the joy that awaits them there. Your assistance in the following ways would be greatly appreciated:
- Attach our Newsletter to your Newsletter, website and by any other means that your school uses to communicate information. We ask that you include our information in your newsletter more than once – preferably in March, April, May and June.
- Print and display the attached poster.
- Print and display information postcards in a prominent location in your school. If you print them back to back, then you can cut them in half so they look like a postcard.
- Consider bringing your students to a retreat at camp! Both camps offer spring and/or fall bookings for school groups. Though this spring is filling quickly, there are still some spots available. This is a wonderful way to introduce your students to the idea of Camping with Christ!
If you have any questions about Camp Encounter and Our Lady of Victory Camp or would like more information, please check out our websites at www.olvc.ab.ca or www.campencounter.com or contact our camp office: (403)986-6582 or by email info@olvc.ab.ca or info@campencounter.com
Thank you for your time and assistance. We look forward to seeing many young people from your school at our camps. May God bless you and your school family abundantly!

We are St. Sophia’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish… a community of over 250 members mostly residing in and around Strathcona County. This year is a very exciting time for our Parish as we have made the announcement to start development of a brand new church in Sherwood Park. Over the years we have had many fundraisers to realize this goal and we are now commencing preparations for our 7th Annual Golf Tournament and once again are looking for your support.
The primary focus of the tournament is to have fun and encourage interaction amongst St. Sophia parishioners and friends, while raising much-needed funds for the parish and its goal of building our new church in the community.
The tournament will be held at Broadmoor Golf Course on Saturday, June 9th (see additional information below). Just like last year, there will be the many complimentary food and beverage holes for golfers to enjoy.
There also will be an Early Bird Prize drawn for those golfers that register and pay by Monday, May 7th. The Early Bird Prize is a round of golf including a cart and dinner at the Broadmoor Golf Course – valued at over $400!
Last year we had a full roster for the tournament and registrations are already filling up quickly!
Hope to see you out there!
