Kindergarten Registration has started!
January 4 was the start of Kindergarten registration for the 2018-2019 school year.
If you have a rising Kindergartener, it is VERY important to you get them registered as early as possible! If you have older children already on the year round calendar, we need to know about your Kindergartener in order to make sure ALL of your children are on the same track.
If Turner Creek is NOT your base school and you have an incoming Kindergartener, by JANUARY 31, please contact the main office at 919-363-1391 for registration information.
We are accepting registrations Monday – Friday from 9:30 – 2:00. The packet can be found on our website, bring that along with a proof address (power bill, gas bill or water bill), child’s birth certificate, photo ID for parent and the most current shot record to the Main Office during the designated times.
Inclement weather
We have already had our first round of inclement weather! Please remember to contact your child’s teacher and make sure they know how your child should go home IF we release early unexpectedly! We have parents give us this information at the beginning of the year but often parents change it and forget to let the teachers know.
As you can imagine, unexpected early dismissals can be quite hectic. Please help your child and their teacher by making sure everyone is on the same page. Thank you!
Talent Show
Does your child shine?
We are excited to share that the Turner Creek Talent Show is back! All grades are welcome. The show will be held Thursday, February 15th at 6 pm in the gym. There will be rehearsals on Tuesday, February 6th and Wednesday, February 7th at 3:30 pm right after school in the gym. We encourage your child to consider a variety of talents,
such as, singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument, sports demonstrations, science, comedy, etc. Individual and group acts can be up to 2 minutes.
Please fill out the online form to register your child for the show:
http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4118170/Talent-Show.
Each act only needs to register once (e.g., only one registration needed for a group act). The deadline to register is Friday, January 26th. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis; only the first 40 registered acts will be allowed to participate.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the show!
Upcoming Cultural Arts Performance
Number Drummer creator, Troy Kryzalka, has worked in music education for over 15 years and has delivered his integrated math and music learning approach to thousands of children and educators. He has an amazing ability to reach creative “outside the box” thinkers that have been discouraged by the traditional ways of learning, and because of his focus on mathematics in music, he represents the increased value and importance of music in schools. Combining his musical ability, mathematical perspective, and creative teaching methods, Troy inspires, engages, and motivates children to understand math and music from a fresh new perspective, regardless of age or ability. Tracks 1 & 3 students will see the performance on Feb. 28 (rescheduled from Jan 19) and tracks 2 & 4 will see it on Feb. 8.
Coming to TCE: Harlem Renaissance
Coming to Turner Creek February 5-16, via generous PTA funding, will be an exploration of the Harlem Renaissance!
The Harlem Renaissance was centered in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. Uniquely express themselves as artists and intellectuals, they explored their identities as Black Americans, celebrating the Black culture that had emerged out of slavery and their cultural ties to Africa.
Students will learn across the cultural spectrum (literature, drama, music, visual art, dance) and also in the realm of social thought (sociology, historiography, philosophy), artists and intellectuals found new ways to explore the historical experiences of Black America.
United Arts Visitor
Tony Peacock will be visiting TCE as the 4th grade Writer in Residence. He will be practicing the art of personal narrative. For the week of February 5th-9th, Mr. Peacock will be working with Tracks 1 & 2. He will return for the week of February 26th - March 2nd for Tracks 3 & 4.
Tony Peacock has been sharing his love of writing with students for more than 15 years. He has lived in all regions of North Carolina and has been a lifelong student of our state's diverse cultural and literary heritage. In addition to publishing fiction and creative nonfiction, Tony has worked as a newspaper columnist and written radio commentaries. He partners with teachers to enrich their curriculum goals and help students grow as writers. As a National Hollerin' Champion, he often rewards students at the end of residencies by briefly demonstrating traditional calls used by farmers as a form of communication and expression. Tony's impact on students and staff has been called "an amazing story of connecting and bonding."
Thank you to the United Arts and to the parents of TCE for supporting arts in our school!
Frogapalooza is COMING!!!
The Frogapalooza cultural street fair is just a few months away. We are seeking volunteers in several areas: planning the arts & crafts activities, planning the games, and soliciting donations from local businesses.
If you are interested in helping out, please contact Maggie Demicco at maggie.demicco@gmail.com.
Early Release Teacher Lunch- Taco Bar
TCE PTA will be providing lunch for the wonderful staff on the early release day Friday, February 9th, 2018. We will be providing meats from Moe's and are asking families to send in sides, drinks, and desserts.
Please sign up for items using the sign-up genius link below and send them in to the office by 9:15 on Friday, February 9th. Non-perishable items may be sent in sooner. Please label all items "teacher lunch." If you have any questions please email Kristen Conner at kaconner@gmail.com or Christine Hamm at cbhamm@gmail.com. Thank you!
Jump Rope for Heart
Turner Creek Elementary will be participating in Jump Rope For Heart to help raise funds for the American Heart Association. The donations that are received will be used by the American Heart Association for research and educational programs to save lives from heart disease and stroke! Raising contributions is voluntary. All students will participate in a special jump rope day during a regular PE class time in February.
Family and friends are welcome to support your child’s participation by making contributions. Please convert all cash to a check(s) payable to the American Heart Association. You can also build a website and email family and friends for donations. The information to do this is on the parent letter that came home with the collection envelope. Don’t forget to ask donors if their employers have matching gift programs. This is an easy way to increase the contributions your child collects.

Track Change Request Information
Typically, during December and January, we have offered parents an opportunity to request a track change for the upcoming school year. Because of continued uncertainty regarding the impact of the new K-3 class size legislation, we are delaying the track change request period until April, 2018.
We apologize for the delay and inconvenience; however, we do not want to make changes until we are more certain of how the new class size legislation will be implemented at Turner Creek. As soon as information is available regarding track change requests, we will post information on our website and in the Ribbit Report newsletter.
