The Manning Weekly Newsletter
January 18, 2019
Dear Families,
Martin Luther King, Jr. was an agent of radical change in our country and arguably the most prominent figure of our civil rights movement during the 1960's. As we observe MLK Day this Monday, we should reflect on his statement about the goal of true education:
"Intelligence plus character."
In my humble opinion, I believe we at Manning do a great job of building both of these attributes in our students. In terms of developing intelligence, our focus on the higher levels of understanding (creating, evaluating, and analyzing) teach our students to be able to think critically in a multitude of different life situations. Meanwhile, our amazing school culture and the norms we have set for behavior make it easy to continue to develop young men and women of exceptional character.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. challenges us as educators to think big picture as we mold our students today into the citizens we wish to see in our society tomorrow.
Have a great three-day weekend.

January 19th Chess Tournament
This Saturday is our next tournament.
You can sign up HERE
Also - I have changed the date of my final tournament from 4/27/2019 to 5/4/2019 because of the all girls scholastic championship.
State Scholastic Championship and ALL GIRLS Championship.
The State Scholastic Chess Championship is coming Februrary 23rd and 24th. I HIGHLY recommend playing in this tournament for anybody who has enjoyed playing in the regular monthly tournaments. This is an amazing once a year opportunity to play some amazing chess and for a select few to become state champions for their grade group.
You can sign up and find all information HERE
Also, for the first time ever - Colorado will have an ALL GIRLS State Scholastic Chess Championship is going to happen April 27th. This is a long time dream in the making and we're hoping to get enough attendance to justify making it a regular event. This purpose of this event is to empower girls in chess. It's not always easy being a girl in the male dominated sport of chess. Keep a lookout for more details to come!

Anyone Want to Coach Boys Basketball?
I have some updates from last week regarding the 6th/7th grade Manning boys basketball team starting practice next week.
There are now enough Manning students on the waitlist to form a 2nd 6th/7th grade team (teams of 9 and 10 players). My goal for all of the middle school teams is to allow as many students to participate as possible. In this situation, there are two issues with adding a 2nd team: number of coaches and gym space.
Currently, I have one coach assigned to coach the initial 6th/7th grade Manning team. In order to accommodate a second team, I would need at least one additional coach. Unless something changes over the next couple of days with one of my other teams, this second team would need at least one parent from this group to help out and coach. The coaching position can be a paid (at $11.78/hour) or volunteer position, and would be for Tuesdays and Thursdays for 8 weeks from 1/15-3/14 from 3:30-5:00pm for practices at Manning and a slightly longer commitment on game dates (~3:30-5:30 or 6:00).
If someone is able to coach and we can accommodate that second team, the other piece is managing the gym space with three teams sharing (including the one 8th grade team). Manning has an outdoor, blacktop court that can be used as long as the weather is safe. If someone can coach the second team, I would have one team practice outside each day with the other two teams inside. That setup would rotate each practice so every team gets ~equal indoor and outdoor practice time.
Please let me know if you are interested in coaching the team, and I’ll walk you through the application steps and get you setup for next week. We already have 2 great boys coaches for the two current teams, so you’d be joining some great coaches already.

Enroll Jeffco Is Coming!
Jeffco Public Schools is rolling out a new student enrollment system called EnrollJeffco for the 2019-20 school year. This new enrollment system has two components. First, a tool called School Finder, which is a searchable database of information about all Jeffco Public Schools. Families with new preschool students and those who want to participate in choice enrollment to attend a school other than their current or neighborhood school will apply for their school of choice through this system.
Starting December 17: Go to www.enrolljeffco.org to learn about the schools near you.

Students With IEPs
IEP requires Mild / Moderate Supports:
Family may follow standard processes: Current student → Enrolling at Expected School Current student → Applying to Choice School New to Jeffco → Enrolling at N’hood School New to Jeffco → Applying to Choice School
IEP requires more intensive supports (e.g. Center Program):
Student will be directly placed at an appropriate school or program by a member of the Special Education department.
Board Policy JFBA Summary
1) Only one enrollment offer per student may be in “accepted” status at any given time
2) Enrollment offers expire after 5 days (expiration may be waived by school)
3) “Siblings” defined → Siblings by birth, step-siblings, adopted, and foster siblings. Also included are children subject to legal guardianship or other children related by blood or marriage living with the currently enrolled student’s family in a regular parent-child relationship and who are dependent upon the current student’s parent/guardian(s) for support.
4) “Child of Staff” defined → Solely defined as first-degree children by birth, step-children, adopted children, and foster children.
5) Accommodation will be made for siblings applying together (once one has been offered enrollment, the other is bumped up to sibling status)
6) Once a family has accepted an enrollment offer, the new school is considered their “home” school (to enroll in neighborhood school, they‘ll need to submit a Round 2 application, and enrollment is not guaranteed)
7) Once a student attends a school, they may continue to attend until their grade level is no longer served (choice application required to stay)

EFFORT
- Oliver Hughes caught upon all of his work in one class after he changed his schedule.
- The janitors give their best effort each day to clean the school
- Mrs. Sawyer is amazing! She makes her lessons interesting so that we do not get board. She jokes with her students and understands of better than a lot of our teachers. She knows when it is time to work and when we can have fun again. She teaches things beyond the classroom that will help us outside of school and for the rest of our lives. She really cares about her students and makes sure they know she cares. Mrs. Sawyer is so supportive it is unreal. Thank you Mrs. Sawyer for making everyday better than the last.
- Our Nurse is so kind towards every kid who walks through her door. Every time you come in your greeted with a smile. She will take care of you and always check up with you after you leave her office. Thank you for checking up with us.
- Ms. Jacobs has worked very hard to cover for Mrs. Moore since she had her baby early, and she is working even harder to understand us and the rhythm of this school. She is also a great teacher for my science class, and does her very best effort to learn the concept as quick as she can. Go Mrs. Jacobs!!!!
ACHIEVEMENT
- Freya Nagy is the hardest-worker. She gets all A's, and always turns her homework in on time. She works hard for her part in musical theater, and always lends a helping hand. She also helped lead the tour of Manning! She is such a help to everyone.
RESPECT
- Graham Trusedale is a friend of mine. He is always supper positive every where. Also at lunch when he goes to get a napkin or something he always asks are table group if we needed anything. In all he has a great attitude to everyone.
- Gwyn, Sydney Madlock, Clayton, Stella Meyer, Audrey, Eliza, Elizabeth Swanson, Melin, Norah, and Lauren Hack are always amazing friends to every one, and will find someone sitting alone at recess, and walk to say hi and invite that person into any game they are playing. They respect each other, while still being fun and kind.
- Nora Bendl is an amazing friend! She has a great sense of humor and is kind to everyone around her.
- Jordan Chang is very nice and is always joking around with us. He is very funny and nice. And I am glad to have him as a friend.

TEAMWORK
- Mr. Crawford makes social studies "great again!" He allows us to learn through playing games. He has the best jokes like "don't be sorry be better." His enthusiasm is fantastic! He really tries to connect with his students and help us to succeed in every way possible. Thanks for being such a great role model Mr. Crawford.
- Miette Jandreau is always respectful to her teachers, always finds a new way to solve her problems, and always helps those who need it. She is a joy to be around, and is always encouraging her friends. She also bought a lunch for me when I had no money. She is friendly face when you need it.
