- Viewing will start at approximately 1:30PM. All guests will need to arrive prior to 1:30PM for the viewing.
- All students may bring a blanket or beach towel to sit on outside. Any adults that will be coming at 1:30PM may bring camp chairs if sitting on the ground is not comfortable.
- Southside does ask that your family stay with a teacher. If you have more than one student at Southside please make sure that each teacher knows where your family will be.
- Viewing will end at approximately 2:15PM.
- We will be dismissing students as normal.
- Parents that come to view the eclipse with their student may check out their student with the teacher and leave from the viewing area. If you have more than one student here at Southside YOU MUST CHECK EACH STUDENT OUT INDIVIDUALLY WITH EACH TEACHER. This is for the safety of all students.
- If you would like to check out your student before the school starts the viewing at 1:30PM you may come to the office and check your student out at 1:00PM. This will be an excused check out at 1:00PM however will count against Perfect Attendance.
- If you do plan to check out your student at 1:00PM please write a note that morning so that Southside can plan for the early excused check out.
If you have any questions about this exciting day please call our office at 502-633-4460. We are very excited to share this experience with all of our Tigers!
Shelby County Public Schools Announcement about the Eclipse
On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe inspiring sights - a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun's tenuous atmosphere - the corona - can be seen, will stretch from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun's disk. (NASA.gov)
Eclipse 101
This celestial event is a solar eclipse in which the moon passes between the sun and Earth and blocks all or part of the sun for up to about three hours, from beginning to end, as viewed from a given location. For this eclipse, the longest period when the moon completely blocks the sun from any given location along the path will be about two minutes and 40 seconds. The last time the contiguous U.S. saw a total eclipse was in 1979.
For SCPS
Our principals have worked with their teachers to devise plans at each school. Here’s what you can expect:
- School will be in session. This is because we believe the eclipse is a wonderful teaching and learning opportunity.
- We acknowledge the possibility of damage to the eyes if humans stare at the sun for prolonged periods of time. Therefore, we are providing viewing glasses for all of our students.
- All of our principals plan for their students to be able to safely view the eclipse. The glasses are not required for being outside at the time but are needed for prolonged direct viewing of the sun.
- Many of our teachers have been researching and planning for months.
- Science teachers are in the lead.
- At SCHS the Science Department is planning a school-wide teaching and learning event. Expect to see everyone from SCHS and the ATC outside that afternoon.
- BPLA is planning a cross curricular learning designed primarily by Ms. Underwood, the science teacher. Our students in Project Rebound will also be participating in an event designed by Ms. Underwood.
- This will be Northside’s first day for students. The teachers are planning for the event with each parent as they meet them in the normal orientation visits.
- Clear Creek and Heritage teachers are finalizing their plans for a school-wide learning focus and will share details with families as the date draws closer.
- Painted Stone teachers have designed lessons correlated with the event.
- Southside is planning a school-wide viewing coupled with small group learning for grade levels.
- Wright has a school-wide learning event with Dr. Billy Betts in the lead.
- At West Middle, there will be a school wide learning plan with the Science department in the lead.
- The East Middle Science teachers are taking a “wonder and awe” approach. Students will be researching questions collaboratively.
- At Simpsonville, the entire school will be involved in the learning with the 4th-grade PBL unit as a focus group. This group is partnering with a meteorologist from WAVE 3.
- At MLCHS the Science Department is taking the lead for a school-wide learning opportunity. Additionally, the Astronomy class has partnered with Franklin-Simpson High School and will travel to join their Astronomy class in viewing the eclipse.
- Students will be allowed to take the viewing glasses home.
