Special Update
Spain Park High School 03/20/20
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
I hope all of you are safe, healthy, and are coping with the changes the Coronavirus has brought to our lives. It is my hope that with a strong resolve and much discipline, we will get through this crisis and return to what we enjoy, our normalcy. Please keep our leaders, our health care providers, and all who are charged with making the difficult decisions.
The third Nine-Week Grades are now posted and are available for you to review in iNOW. We will not send hard copies of your student’s report cards at this time. Due to the interruption of school last week, many students were not allowed to get unexcused absences cleared and not able to make up work. Due to this your student’s grade may not be accurate. If you have a question about a grade, the first point of contact is the teacher.
This past Monday, we met with our district leaders to discuss our plan to deliver online instruction should we be out of school beyond the Alabama State Department Of Education mandated date of Friday, April 3rd. Wednesday, our building leadership team met to finalize our instruction plan. Thursday, we met via “Google Meet” to roll out the plan to our Department Chairs and get their feedback. Today, we met with the teachers of each department to share information, discuss the expectations we have for our teachers, provide support, and get them ready to educate our students. This is uncharted waters as we have never attempted to provide online instruction to this magnitude. We all should be grateful for the resources that Hoover City Schools provides for us, especially our Technology Initiative. I have faith in our teachers, our parents, and most importantly our students, that working together we will get this job done.
Our tentative timeline is as follows:
Our teachers will reach out to students before Spring Break. Please make sure your student checks his/her email and/or Google classroom (whatever is normal for each class).
The school will be closed Monday, March 23 - Friday, March 27 for Spring Break.
Teachers will begin reaching out to their students on Monday, March 30, and Tuesday, March 31 in preparation to begin online classes on Monday, April 6th. Teachers expect to receive a reply from the students following this communication (this is not for instruction, but simply to ensure that our communication is working). This will help us identify students who may have a problem that prohibits them from responding. We then can provide support.
We are planning a day and time for students who need to retrieve essential items from the school such as chromebook, books, notebooks, etc. We will send that specific information out later. This will not be during the week of Spring Break, but will occur during the week of March 30th. We will follow CDC guidelines.
Callouts, Website posts, Emails, Remind, Text Messages, Phone Calls, Social Media will be used to communicate with you as we get closer to April 3rd.
Grace Klein Community will provide food for students - http://kidhelp.gkcbham.com/
HCS CNP Meal Plan
CNP will not be working or providing meals during the original Spring Break, but will return on 3/30/20 serving the drive-thru at Green Valley Elementary School.
Be sure to stay updated on athletics - http://www.ahsaa.com/Schools/COVID-19-Updates
Take advantage of the Spain Park network of professionals who are ready to assist you with any problem you may have. We will send out a list of contacts for those resources after the week of Spring Break.
Once I have more information, I will address our Senior Class on how we move forward with the last few weeks of the year. The Class of 2020 has done so much for our school and our community that we could never repay them. I hope we can help them enjoy those memorable events that they waited so long to have.
I hope everyone has a safe, restful, and healthy Spring Break!
Sincerely,
Peter L. Giangrosso
